This artifact shows a lesson plan designed to create enthusiasm for the topic, poetry, in the students. It demonstrates mastery of subject matter by including a wide variety of poetic forms, including acrostic, chants, Cinquain, Haiku, and limericks, as wall as visual representations of poems.

It demonstrates understanding of the students and their community by including things familiar to them, such as song lyrics and use of the Internet in a way designed to support the lesson plans and the objectives of the unit. It recognizes that students learn in a variety of ways by including a variety of ways to consider poetry, including song, chants, visual interpretations, and both individual and group work.

It reflects curriculum goals in its scope and breadth as it includes reading, analyzing, evaluating and writing poetry and because it makes specific reference to matching content to state objectives. The artifact includes multiple ways to analyze poetry including the difference between editing and revising. It incorporates other mastered skills by using an established writer's workshop format for some of the activities. In addition it provides opportunities for students to refine and polish skills needed across the curriculum, such as oral presentation.

The artifact includes consideration of how to assess learning. Students use peer critique as well as other forms of collaboration. This artifact also demonstrates integration with this set of knowledge and skills into the rest of the course's content, as the information and skills learned in this unit will be used regularly throughout the rest of the school year. This artifact focuses on one poem, "The Raven" by Edgar Allen Poe. Its goal is to learn how Poe used atmosphere and symbolism in the poem, and addresses three specific NYS standards. It specifies the behavioral objectives students are expected to master as a result of this lesson. It specifies the materials and then breaks the lesson out into specific steps for the instructor to follow.

The first activity, considering the importance of specific words in the poem, supports the lesson plan goal of studying atmosphere and symbolism in the poem. It further prepares the students for the type of poem they will be reading and elements often used in horror literature to heighten the reader's emotional response. It then delineates the horrific elements of this poem. Students should then be well prepared to spot these elements in the poem.
