Leadership Management

Leadership Roles and Responsibilities at Southwest Furniture

A successful organization is one which is molded to meet its goals through operational efficiency. Though there are possibly infinite circumstances which can effect the day-to-day and long-term outlook for any organization, it is in the hands of competent meanagerial that such an organization can poise itself to drive toward its goals regardless of the outlook. This is an accomplishment which can be met by implementing a strategy specifically applicable to the needs of the organization, with measures of planning, organizing, leading and controlling meted out to reflect that application.

Of these functions, perhaps leadership is the most important feature to be yielded from the overall roles of a management. This would be a crucial feature of my tenure as the owner and primary operator of Southwest Furniture. In my role as the principal supervisor of personnel, I have found it necessary to manage the affairs and performances of a staff that has included between five and seven employees at all times. As both owner and operator, it has fallen upon me to conduct the hiring and firing which have formulated our staff. In order to conduct the latter of these responsibilities, I have also overseen performance evaluation, using day-to-day observations as a gauge for recognizing the special efforts of some employees and, on a rare occasion, the problematic lapses of others.

Given the modest scale of our organization, promotion and demotion activities are fairly limited, though in the event that we are holding a special event or promotion, I will tend to select those who have already demonstrated some degree of performance excellence in order to handle the more pressing tasks. This is a method of delegation which I find also has been most effective where staffing and scheduling are concerned. Of the members of my staff, individuals who demonstrate leadership tendencies on their own are viewed as candidates for managerial responsibilities. Therefore, I am finding that there is a benefit in creating an Assistant Manager position, through which these scheduling duties may be performed. This allows me the freedom to focus on the important matters of budgeting and financial planning.

Indeed, during my years as the owner/operator at Southwest, I have become increasingly adept at the maintenance and interpretation of financial records, budgetary concerns, inventory flow and adherence to appropriate accounting procedures. In all of these regards, I have found that there is no more crucial feature than experience, which is something that I have gained with the passage of time.

This also allows me to plan with precision when establishing business objectives, a primary leadership function that does nothing less than promote a vision for the immediate and long-term future of the organization. Armed with such a vision, I am often the central point of reference for the planning of in-store activities, the creation of sales and promotions designed to increase in-store traffic and the construction of advertising campaigns that have the potential to enhance our image and the presentation of our organization.
