The Five Steps of Leadership

Strong leadership is the seed of a successful organization. Everyone can set goals and suffer through battles to achieve what one wants; however only one who figures out how to develop strong leadership from scratch and become skilled at decision-making and team-building, knows best how to play the card, and most likely will accomplish the full result.

The following concept presents the five common basis of leadership and how one can follow it as the process to achieve the goals.

You must know what you believe.

Knowing oneself is a total exploration to be a leader. During the journey to fulfill the challenge, one has to start somewhere. This means that the person needs to depart from a strong base, where he/she can define the most important values or goals he/she wants to accomplish in life. A list of clear focuses will help the individual to set the target and plan the actions to achieve it.

Bender (2004) stated that knowing oneself is important for the person to learn the capabilities and constraints, and work it towards the goals.

It may not take a long time for a person to learn the strengths through self-analysis and observation over daily achievements. Strengths come in many types such as physical condition, wealth, knowledge, power, security, and interpersonal relationship.

On the other hand, it may take a while to realize the weaknesses, and further to admit it. A leader needs to possess the power for this acknowledgment. Any form of shortcomings should not be taken as the negative aspect, but for the leader to learn. Numerous resources, ranging from courses, books, and network should be helpful for the leader to find assistance.

You must have courage.

Risks are the part of human being. Even a relaxing and safe activity such as sleeping has risk nobody can escape from. Risks are to be approached, and a leader needs strategies to conquer them. Bender (2004) explained that leaders should take steps to get into the water and do what they have to do without demanding too much perfection. Mistakes are parts of human's life and should not be the drawback in the decision making process. Therefore good leaders should dare themselves to try and anticipate whatever they may face as the effect of their decision. However, it is essential to have thorough examination of the risks, so that the leader of the organization can foresee the success as well as failure; anticipate the needs and see the forthcoming impact to the organization.

You must have great team.

Once a person successfully takes control of him/herself and able to analyze the problem, he/she needs to take action. Expanding an organization requires good composition of both strategy and skills. A leader needs help from other people to execute each step, technically and conceptually. Only a team with the right people and the right attitude will make it to the top.

A leader sets the model, designs the manual, and presents the goals of what he/she wants to achieve in the organization. The leader should be able to choose the right man for the right work, teach them about the concept, and help them finish the task. A leader will also need to maintain the harmony within the teamwork, as often team-working induces much pressure, intrigues, and shortage of trust and confidence among the team members, as the workload goes uphill. As the teamwork will be the only chance to build a solid organization, there must be a single vision of what all personnel are working for. Therefore the leader should continually monitor the performance and keep the weather cool.

You must communicate effectively.

Commonly leaders talk down to the subordinates and staffs, and tell the people what they want them to do for the organization. Technically, this action creates a structure in which commands and instructions are transferred to the executing staff. One thing that leaders should bear in mind is that they always work with people, no matter the advanced technology they are using. Leaders cannot just talk down to the staff as if this was a sole command, but more properly they should build a two-way communication with the staff, telling that they are working together, not one working for the other.

It is also important that the leader learns to speak in the employees' language. Rather than showcasing the power he/she possesses, it is better to explain concepts and instructions to short, simple and understandable language.

Human has the unique status of interpersonal relationship, including respect and self-judgment. Those factors often are critical for the well-being of the organization. It is important that leaders bring the self-respect out of their employees; open their eyes that the leaders' success happens to be the employees' success as well. Both leaders and employees work together for the same goal, to benefit each other. Within the same ship, employees, or as individuals, will set themselves similar goals, and work to support themselves, while building the organization.

You must be an optimist.

In fact, no single leader in the world has ever made an achievement without breakdown experience. A good leader needs to see the light in every incident. Bad emotion is contagious among the members and may easily multiply into a storm that endangers the organization. If a leader gives up easily, the organization may collapse just faster than the blowing wind itself.

In the beginning of his/her career, a prospective leader may just come with scholar knowledge, from books, lectures, print information, and electronic media. Those resources give enough materials to begin the ride. As the organization grows, a leader becomes skillful with the experience. The more experience he/she gains, the more confidence he/she grows and spreads to the other members of the organization.

How to Combine the Five Elements to Achieve the Maximum Result

In business, no element stands alone. With the complicated factors rocking the life of the organization, only strong and effective leader will make through the battle by bringing issues together. Some issues need single element of leadership to handle, while others may need the amalgamation of several actions. For this point, the leader should be able to make the most effective way to solve the problem, by employing the smallest resource, the shortest process, in order to achieve the best result. Timing is also critical, so the leader must be able to analyze the problem and make the decision in the shortest time possible. In other word, a mature leader will be able to apply the strategic thinking concept in solving every problem.
