The Desktop Computer

Monday through Friday, week after week, I am constantly using my desktop while at work. Located beneath the left side of my small, insignificant desk, this Dell Desktop is the sole keeper of all my important records, pictures, papers, and all kinds of other very important information. It resides there on the left side below my desk because of the immensely wide, however not significantly tall, file cabinet which also resides to my left on the eastern side of the office. Despite the eastern position of the actual bulk of the computer, the monitor that displays all of its visual information remains right in front of my eye. Located in the very center of my small, insignificant desk, this flat panel dell monitor never shines any other color than its dismal black. The frame of the monitor is smooth with a dark color; however, it produces vibrant colors of purples, yellows, and hot, hot, hot pinks. Working only when the power's on, the monitor is always a servant to the desktop. On top of the wood desk, directly below the location of the monitor lies the keyboard. I hear it make it's clicking as my fingers grab hold of the cold, dark plastic. Although I hear the clicks, I cannot look down to the characters being smashed down; I have to keep my eyes upon that which I have been reading and regurgitating onto the keys. As my eyes tire, I sink deeper into the chair. The cushiony velvet welcomes my back. Yet, every once and a while I am disturbed with its coils. The wheels squeak as I move back and forth. However, the sound is less appealing than the click of the keyboard. It is the sound of work. I hear the noise and I know I am being productive, something is getting done. I have done something today; I have worked. Without the desktop, however, I would not be so satisfied with the physical feeling of my work. Isn't that why we work in the first place?

Machine Metaphor in Organizations The machine metaphor for an organization is one of two orthodox metaphors, the other being the organization as an organism (Morgan, 1980). This metaphor not only included machines and fixed assets, but

The professional manager held ultimate responsibility for construction, while the designer's authority with respect to the client receded. on-site work done by subcontractors was managed by large general contractors who provided the supervising engineers, and did not necessarily have to adhere to the designers places (Cuff 33).
