Funds for training and research are provided by NINR. Fellowships enable scientists to be trained to conduct independent nursing research and to collaborate in interdisciplinary research through individual and institutional pre-doctoral, post-doctoral, and senior awards. Grants enable schools of nursing with research programs to provide full-time pre-doctoral and post-doctoral research training. NINR also provides Career Development Awards, Mentor Research Scientist Development Awards (to promote diversity), and Career Training Awards as well as numerous other training and research opportunities both on and off the NIH campus.

The office of Extramural Activities is made up of the Office of Extramural Programs (OEP), the Office of Grants Management (OCGM), and the Office of Review (OR). The OEP manages the funding activities of NINR that occur outside of NIH. The NINR OEP is organized into four sections: Neuroscience, Genetics, & Symptom Management; Child & Family Health, & Health Disparities; Immunology, Infectious Disease and Chronic Disorders; and Acute & Long-Term Care, End-of-Life, & Training. In addition the OEP oversees a nationwide Research Centers program. These Centers are designed to bring together scientists, students, and other colleagues with similar interests to focus on a common area of investigation. The OCGM facilitates business activities with regards to the negotiation, award and administration of grants and cooperative agreements....

The OR sets policy direction and coordination for the planning and execution of initial scientific and technical reviews.
The NINR's campus-based Division of Intramural Research (DIR) is designed to help the nursing science community utilize the resources, infrastructure, and mentoring opportunities available at NIH. The DIR looks to understand the underlying biological mechanisms of a range of symptoms, their effect on patients, and how patients respond to interventions. It facilitates two major activities the Symptoms Management Branch and Research Training.

The activities performed by the NINR are essential to furthering our understanding of a wide spectrum of biological mechanisms their symptoms and effect on patients, and how patients respond to interventions. This fall NINR commemorates 25 years of nursing research. Founded on the belief that nursing science could contribute in new and distinctive ways to the health care sciences the organization is dedicated to improving the health of the nation's people.
