Difference between Leadership and Management Leadership and management are synonymous but different in many aspects. To see the difference between the two, we first have to understand the responsibilities related to those positions.
The following are some of the differences: a manager administers tasks while a leader innovate ideas, a manager maintains the status quo where as a leader develops skills of employees, a manager transact business focusing on the system's structure of an organization while a leader focuses on people. Management tasks' bases on control and are short ranged while leadership functions inspires trust among workers. Managers are transactional leaders and leaders transformational. Through my interaction with management in a health institution, I found out what is important in leadership and human resource management. The manager had strong communication and interpersonal skills; he interacted with the staff expertly, helping in solving minor problems in the facility. Manion also stated that a good leader has a particularly high degree of emotional intelligence and is social with almost the entire work group. I realized this was true through my interaction with the manager.
He had excellent interpersonal skills and made the employees comfortable talking to him. This, therefore, enabled tasks to run smoothly. I also realized that good communications promote relationships towards accomplishment of organizational goals. My practical skills as a caregiver were also tested, as during the routine management trips we had to lend a hand in the medical operations at the institution. This made me realize that, as a manager, it is important to offer direct aid to patients and not just leaving it to the staff.
Furthermore, the supervisor must have a keen understanding of the laws and guidelines of the institution so that he can help in interpreting them to the staff. During the interview, there were times when directions were asked of the manager from the employees on how to go about tackling a problem. Sometimes the problems were so technical requiring the quoting of laws. I realized that this is a vital part of the managerial skill that has to be cultivated in order to make an effective manager.
Also as the manager was doing his rounds, I realized that many people were asking him to solve their problems, be it social or technical, therefore, a leader should be have the ability of solving problems in a logical and reasoned manner and also be able to motivate people towards the efficient completion of tasks. Learning about human resource is vital to understand about the workings of managers and nurses. Through the learning of human resource management, I have been able to better understand the planning of organizations.
Through issues like planning and task allocation, I realized that the organization has various people assigned to different tasks and that this is important for the smooth functioning of the organization. Also through this careful planning and allocation of human resources, I realized that an upward channel of communication is created from the employee to the manager, and this makes it faster and easier for the manager to realize mistakes quickly once they happen.
I realized further that human resources can improve the impact of management and make the manager to be more effective. This experience has shifted my thinking and my perception of the managerial positions. My desire as a manager would be to focus more on developing employee relations. One concept of human resource management is to develop these relationships. I believe that good relationships between the manager and employees will lead to more efficient trouble shooting and higher job satisfaction on both sides.
Also, as a future manager, my learning experience has taught me how to deal with problems in the organization through planning and resource allocation. My learning experience has.
