¶ … Nursing Research in Future
Hallberg, I.R. (2006). Challenges for future nursing research: Providing evidence for health-care practice. International Journal of Nursing Studies. 43: 923-927
Nursing research has become a question of practicality. Is it prudent for funding to go into Nursing research when there is so much funding getting cut from everything and anything that is involved in health care. This article goes into the usage of nursing research and examines its need for society, from both a sociological perspective, as well as a medical and health perspective. The idea is to get nursing research into a more mainstream type of environment in which its practicality is more valued and it can be seen as something that can be used in future studies outside of nursing.
Nursing research tends to lean more towards the qualitative side of research. Although this in itself has brought plenty of contribution into the medical atmosphere, it is also not what many scientists look into. They themselves are more interested in new scientific findings, of more numerical data, and seeing the right numbers in front of them so that others can expand on that research. Analyzing things like charts, graphs, and statistical data is something that is sometimes viewed as more valuable because of its ability to be retested more easily.
Facing this challenge in nursing research makes this type of research seem as if it is not as important as the research done by medical doctors or certifies scientists. But the qualitative research that the majority of nursing professionals go into does contribute immensely to the quantitative portion as it is one that enables the correct procedures to be done and it is the type of research that facilitates its applicability to the general public. This is the type of research that actually deals with the people it is eventually going to affect, but getting it to get as noticed as quantitative research is what makes this process more difficult.

The gap that exists between the theory that nursing research comes up with and the actual practice of the type of research that is done, makes nursing research a difficult concept to understand and apply further beyond the nursing practice. Knowing that nursing research is heavily based on developing new theories in which things should be either improved or newly implemented, does not necessarily always translate to practicality. The researchers in this study attempted to apply nursing research to further venues and analyze why it is that nursing research currently faces challenges.
It seems difficult to comprehend why research that is conducted by nurses is deemed as being less practical because this in itself brings danger to the survival of nursing research in the future. Knowing ways in which nursing research can be theoretically applied to the hard sciences and to the practice of not just medicine, but all health fields and professions will make nursing research more important and will reduce the challenges that it currently faces for its survival in the future. If application is the biggest challenge in nursing research, then finding better ways for it to be put into practice would be an opportunity for this topic to grow and to get the attention that it deserves.
As mentioned in this article, a way for nursing research to survive is to bring to light the ways that the theory contributes to the practice. Instead of seeing these two things as being different entities, they should be seen as one complimenting the other. The biggest challenge in nursing research is that researchers can find it difficult to bring one topic to another, when in reality the theory affects the practice and in order to improve both concepts, they need to be analyzed as being one.
Allen, D. & Taylor, S. (2007). Visions of evidence-based nursing practice. Nurse Researcher. 15(1):78.
While research in nursing is a relatively new field in comparison to the other types of medical and health research, a new method to incorporate and make nursing research more relevant to others and amore applicable field to the world of nursing itself is to make it evidence-based instead of theory-based. The authors of this article make a suggestion as what the two basic ideas behind evidence-based research could make it be easier handled in the United Kingdom. They suggest that the field of nursing research has in itself divided...
