Being in a community college has also given me the chance to get to know my professors very well and go very in-depth into subjects I am interested in. It has been a great experience because I could attain my goals of getting good grades, with the professors' help. I've also learned that in a community college I can pace myself easier from a class units standpoint, and can also get more out of the subjects covered. Best of all, community college classes seem to fit together well, the subject areas flow together and build on top of one another, making learning easier.

I'd give a high school senior the advice of first going to visit both the community college and four-year university they are considering attending first. I'd be sure to tell them to do this on a weekday, and be sure to go and visit the department that is offering their major. I'd also tell them to make an appointment to...

Ask them about career options, how the major is structured, and what is needed from students to excel in their programs. I would also tell them to ask if they could visit at least one class in session, in both the community college and in the four-year college to see the difference as well. Finally, I would tell them to create a short matrix and write down what they see as the strengths and weaknesses of each type of school. Then, after all those steps, I think a high school student would be ready to make the best decision for themselves.
