Personal statement: MBA

I have over twelve years of experience in sales and marketing leadership positions with my current employer Orchid Gulf FZ, an independent trading company specializing in luxury paper. As part of my work for Orchid, I have cultivated relationships with a variety of international companies, spanning from Fedrigoni (Italian), Mohawk (U.S.A), Schefeulen (Germany), to Terraskin (U.S.A). My position has enabled me to become fluent in a variety of business customs, cultures, and attitudes. I seek to broaden and develop this fluency over the course of my participation in an MBA program, as well as hone the sales and marketing skills that have enabled me to flourish at Orchid and grow its consumer base.

I bring a wide variety of skills that would enable me to make a meaningful commitment in terms of my knowledge and experience to my fellow MBA students. As a result of my efforts, the Fedrigoni and Mohawk brands are the top specialized paper brands in the region. As the Director of Sales and Marketing, I have been praised for my ability to identify and convey unique selling proposition (USP) to customers/business partners and for my strengths in product marketing. My fluency in English, Hindi, Persian, Urdu, and Gujarati is well-suited to the international focus of the organization. My international focus and knowledge enabled me to begin new ventures in India during my tenure. I set up teams of 60 sales representatives in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Gujarat, and Kerala. I am proud that I was able to increase the annual turnover of the company from $13m to over $38m in 7 years. As brand manager at Orchid, as well as developing new pricing and promotional strategies, I personally covered sales territories spanning throughout the Middle East as well as India.

Working at Orchid for so long has enabled me to appreciate the diverse skill sets required to function in business today. Promotions and marketing is a multi-faceted discipline that demands a broad-based skill set, particularly when it is deployed on an international level. Yet although I am proud of the many accomplishments I have had over the course of my tenure at Orchid, I wish to stretch my capacities still further and pursue an MBA. An MBA would give me additional knowledge in the fields of finance and advertising, which would inform my capacity to be an effective Director of Sales. It would give me a theoretical basis for what I have thus learned only anecdotally.

An MBA would also enable me to take my skills to a new level to fulfill executive-level positions and make me capable of viewing company's relationships and output in a more holistic manner. It would increase my interpersonal and intercultural intelligence, enabling me to build on what I have already learned intuitively working for an internationally-focused company. I plan to continue to work in the paper industry within my short-term career future, gaining further market share for Orchid. An MBA would allow me to 'connect the dots' in terms of what I have learned thus far in my employment.
