• What is the impact of batching during peak and non-peak periods?

With Batching

No Batching

Batching the tables obviously improves efficiency of the restaurant as well as has a substantial effect on the bottom line. With batching the operation averaged over three hundred dollars and without batching the company actually operated at a loss. One interesting consideration however is that without batching the average drinks sold is over double that when batching is used; most likely because customers are at the bar longer. One strategy might be charge more for drinks to make up for the lost revenue in diners.

• What other sorts of similar production problems might be usefully analyzed using this sort of simulation technique?

Simulations such as this could be used in an infinite number of various arrangements. Anytime there is a technical problem that deals with manipulating different factors in order to optimize the system, such a simulation could both help to find better ways of designing the supply chain as well as serve as a training aid for those who are learning the system.

• Briefly describe what you believe you learned about operations management from your participation in this simulation thus far, if anything.

Operations management is one of the most important functions in business. In this function the organization must deliver to the customer a product or service that is consistent with their expectations. In many cases this is no easy task and operations management is a critical component to providing quality and reliability to consumers.

• Briefly describe any ideas that occur to you as a result of thinking about the simulation in relation to the module topic and readings.

Although the simulations have been referred to as a critical component of learning operations management, it could also be the case that this stifles creative solutions. It is often the case that some creative solution comes from outside the traditional boundaries of operations. Thus teaching individuals dedicated boundaries could potentially have some pitfalls as well; although this unlikely to be a primary concern and the benefits mostly likely outweigh these risks.

• What do you now think of computer-based simulations in general as a learning mechanism? Of this one in particular?
