Poachers' by Tom Franklin is the story of three Gates brothers. They live in a town, off the land, where people are dying. The story emphasizes on the attitude of three boys after they are left alone in that part of the world. It depicts the tragedy of boys, who find themselves in the final retribution after dropping the laws of man and adopting those of nature. The story goes on to show south Alabama's natural looks and it's industrial locality.

It reveals the forests, bogs and rivers, lumber mills, power plants and chemical factories. Franklin shows the state being poached. Iron and steel of pipes, tank, drum and pump replaces the natural mystery of the woods. Poachers do not show the positive attitudes or normality in the society but the story shows a hopeless tale of three half-brothers, sons of a father, who committed suicide. They make their living hunting illegal game, and then killed a warden when he confronts them over it.

The story is gloomy and evocative and the most distinctive and reminiscent piece ever read in fiction. However, this does not seem to be heroic. The reactions of these brothers seem to be funny and comical at times and they behave more like living in an animal world. They do not show higher logical behavior and conduct of a man as distinguished from the animal world. The brothers, poaches on the society.

Though it emphasizes the true image of southerners' area, it is too much embellished with the injustice and irony in the society and portrays irresistible corruption faced in daily life that one might encounter. In the story, the characters and the situations are portrayed quite fuzzy, and the right and wrong are made unclear and vague. The story Poachers is not an ordinary fictional tale or story, but it is more like a piece of the doldrums, not the tale of recognition.

It is set in marsh area of south depicting the negative life attitudes prevailing there. It's very fascinating to note that the three brothers are all alike and everyone behaves in violent and unethical way to perish anything that comes in their way. Even worse than animals, their deeds show amoral and evil beyond. Anything or anyone that will come in their path, they will destroy and kill it. To the more embarrassing situation they also killed much loved and dignified young law man only for their quest of justice.

He was thought to have legendary skills to hunt poachers and causing residents to bring their own hired guns. Wild brothers have got craze to get justice, however, they're themselves behaving brutally. The title novella, the very horrific tale in the whole collection, is one of the most especially terrifying pieces of writing being ever read. Three brothers, the lifelong poachers, are usually reserved to themselves and fearfully tolerated by the society and its people.

Once they're hunted by a bigoted veteran game warden, who is very popular and renowned, but said to have been poacher himself when he was a young man. He turned to law enforcement, from breaking the law, because he found it to be a greater challenge. It's a swamp, dark, and woody area in which this a chilling story takes place. It is evident by reading this story that it is easy to write of 'obtuse people' and their approach.

The story must have been much better if it would have been written with no shadowy settings. Though it portrays the true life in South, the story is dark and there is a sense of hopelessness among the people living there. The story illustrate that how old South is being replaced by new one and how it is grasping lives of ordinary men.

Nevertheless, at few stages of story like fight for dominance is not the current image of South, it should have been written to make sense of anything and life as relaxing and quiet, which now most commonly linked with South. The dark side is dominant overall the narration of a story, but there are still certain areas left weaker and are yet to heal. Though the amount of language used is noteworthy in Franklin's story, the readers would deem offensive.

It is not always necessary that the wordings and language be tactful regardless of the essence of the story that goes betray. At some places it leads to an nasty and vicious environment that gives a tastelessness to the readers. However, Poachers appears to be more appealing in certain literary community along with the acclaimed it has received in the fictional world. Poachers is a boyish adventure, half-fanatic, half-frantic that reverberates throughout the story and seeps into the tapestry of narrowly examined culture of the South. He calls, "my South..

lush and green and full of death, the wooded counties between the Alabama and Tombigbee Rivers." Franklin pictures it a place of blue collars, trailer homes, back roads, guns and weapons. On the one end, the characters seem to be more like ill-mannered, while on other hand, breaking the law at their own will and no one to bring to a halt their infringement. There are many unpleasant things that are felt in the story of teenaged Poachers. The characters are comparable to animal attitudes.

The three brothers being abandoned in childhood shows the attitude similar to animals not being trained or taught. They creep around in the forest at night on foot, or may be by boat or in an old style truck whose floor, "was soft, a tarry black from the blood of all the animals they'd killed. You could see spike antlers, forelegs and hooves of deer, teeth, feathers and fur.
