Because of the proliferation of product information available online these days, one can compile a great deal of facts, pricing information, brands, and so forth about major purchases before exploring any particular resource for buying that major item. Having a solid knowledge base from the start is an excellent first step. Second, armed with the information you've compiled, get some real world opinions on what you are looking to buy; it's no secret that among your family, friends, and co-workers, satisfied and dissatisfied people are always willing to talk openly about their buying experiences. Take this information and treat it like gold, for it is the type of feedback that is hard to find in a magazine article or product review in a Website or something of that nature.

Finally, as a third step, you are ready to buy, but don't make the purchase yet! As important as what you will buy is the decision of where you will buy it....

...

It is worth repeating that this decision should not be based solely on price, because again, based on the value principle, saving a few dollars in buying something from a disreputable source or someone who may not be in business next month if you need additional products or services is not a good reason to go with the lower price. Price is an important thing once you know what you want, but it is not the only thing. If you are fixated on just price, you need to revisit steps one and two as discussed earlier.
This essay has hopefully made the point that preparing for a major purchase, and fully understanding you own needs before the purchase will save you from bad purchase decisions, and even unnecessary ones. In closing, it cannot be stressed enough that you as the buyer have a duty to know what you want and the best way to get it in order to keep a major purchase from becoming a major headache.
