It is crucial that the contract pay specific attention to all details in order to come up with a reasonable price. After the site visit, a proposal should be prepared based on what was discussed with the customer during the site visit.
Before writing the proposal, the contractor should determine how many people will be needed in order to complete the job, how much material will be needed and if any part of the job will need to be subcontracted. All of these factors must be examined carefully and thoroughly in order to get the best possible price for the customer. Markups will need to be done on materials, labor and any subcontracting in order for the contractor to make a decent profit.
However, these markups should not be so exorbitant that the customer flat out refuses to even consider the bid. Even though they may get a good deal on material from their supplier, they still should pass on some type of savings to the customer.
If they discover from the customer that there are several other bids being considered that more reasonably priced than what they are offering, they should not cut corners on any factors required for completion of the project. Contractors should know that their reputation is always on the line and that not every bid for a project will turn into actual work. If another bid which is lower is chosen, the contractor can always try to convince the customer that many times what you get is what you pay for.
