Pharmacology: Treatment for Post Partum Depression I do not believe that it is necessary for Andrew to give up his dream. Certainly, it appears that he has the scholarly talent to make a success of such a career, and if it is his dream, he should definitely carry on in pursuit of it. The fact that he made little effort at school and still obtained good grades attests to the fact that he has no learning deficiencies. Indeed, he appears to be exceptionally gifted at internalizing information. However, it is a little ironic that it is precisely this gift that is causing him chagrin. Hence, while it is not necessary for him to give up his dream, Andrew needs to make a few tough decisions about his future.

Andrew is clearly very smart. The problem, however, is that, although he has put more effort into his work, one hour per night of study, with the rest of the day devoted to "shooting the breeze" with his friends, watching television, and engaging in other social activities does not show great commitment to the career he wants. This is his first challenge; making a decision to commit himself wholeheartedly to his career instead of to social activities.

Andrew does not seem to yet fully recognize how much work and commitment are involved in devoting oneself to a specific medicine-based career like veterinary work. Hence, although an hour per night is a lot of time to devote entirely to study for someone like Andrew, the fact that there is "always" something going on in his room is a powerfully distracting agent. The many events of the day serve to distract Andrew from his studies, even while he believes that he is devoting time to them.
In summary, Andrew's main problem lies in the fact that his personality is very social and that he wants to spend the majority of his free time with friends and engaging in leisure activities. This is simply not possible when devoting oneself to a career like the one he has in mind. Hence, Andrew's decision will be based upon what is most important to him and where he wants to devote the most of his time.
