Respiratory Therapy A respiratory therapist is someone who literally has the life of her patients in her hands. I have been fortunate this semester in being able to talk with people who chose this career. I even spent some time shadowing them at their job. I have known for a long time that I wanted a career in the health care field. Becoming a respiratory therapist sounded interesting.

Now that I have talked with respiratory therapists and seen them at work, I am more certain than ever that this is the right path for me. A respiratory therapist works under the supervision of an intensive care physician or pulmonary specialist. The job, basically, involves management of the patient's airway during trauma or intensive care. A respiratory therapist sometimes administers anesthesia, and may administer medication or medical gases. Respiratory therapists work in many settings, including hospitals, outpatient clinics, and even in ambulances.

It is the job of the respiratory therapist to work with physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals, and also with patients who are suffering from heart and lung problems. It is an important job because it can make a tremendous difference in the lives of patients and the people who love and care for them. While I was investigating this career, I learned some things about myself and realized why I would be a good fit for this job. First and foremost, I like helping people.

This is not a job that centers around money or superficial things. It is about human life. As a mother, I understand that human life is precious. I want to do what I can to help people who are sick or injured. I enjoy learning. I expect that with a career as a respiratory therapist, I will spend a lifetime learning as new and better techniques and medicines are discovered. I know that every day will be different because every person I work with will be different.

I will learn about each patient and get to know him or her. I have enjoyed my science classes so far. I enjoy learning about the human body, how it works, and how we can help people take care of themselves. Motherhood has taught me that life is precious. It has also taught me to be patient and calm. A respiratory therapist works with people who are sick or injured. They will be understandably upset. Families will be upset, too.
