Run Out of Planet, Is an Interesting

Last reviewed: April 28, 2012 ~3 min read

¶ … run out of planet," is an interesting piece which explores the idea that the Sports Utility Vehicle or SUV is something more than what the name implies. David Goewey's in-depth outlook takes into account the history and possible prejudice that the manufacturers and major distributors of these SUV's may have against our exponentially diverse culture. Goeway's purpose in his essay is to present to his reader's attention the propaganda that vehicle manufactures are "forcing" onto society. Obviously, all vehicles have their purpose; the SUV has qualities that will meet any terrain requirements, whether off road or the highway. Goeway's position on American Vehicles is thus that they are too large and bulky, and this paper will discuss this idea further. (You need a thesis at the end of this paragraph, especially a few words telling the reader what you will be focusing on in the paper.)

Goeway first focuses on the names of these SUV's and states that there is some prejudice that is being shown through these very interesting names. Goeway states,

"although the word Cherokee is a misnomer derived from the Choctaw definition for cave dwellersAndrew Jackson undertook an aggressive campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Cherokee, capitalizing on white racism to pass anti-Cherokee legislationThe Manufacturers of the Jeep Cherokee clearly ignore this dismal chapter in U.S. History"

He goes on to state that SUV's are linked with American frontier mythology. As a vastly diverse culture, Americans come across a lot of these ideas, including thoughts that American Mythology is bad, but it is part of our culture. Luckily we are probably the only country that takes societal opinions and feelings toward our cultures' mythology into consideration. In any other culture, this would be quickly shunned and overlooked. Goeway's statement on this fact is obvious and true, but unintentional by the manufacturer. Goeway takes a pessimistic and aggressive view on these vehicle names; if one were to look at it in the opposite way, one would see that they are exalting America's past time by showing how far the country has come since those dismal days in history. America once was a brutal and rough country, as is any new land trying to build a society. American society has fought through slavery, warfare, racism and now onto gay/lesbian acceptance, however; our country truly believes in hearing people's voices and listening. If a vehicle name holds back society, as Goeway elaborates extensively, then our Western civilization has many minor problems to look into, and this is certainly one of them.
