¶ … schooling, I settled on the fact that I should become a teacher. This was a result of deciding what I was going to accomplish with my skills. I have the skills of a good teacher, of knowing American Sign Language and am motivated by feeling teaching quality is important. With an aging population, the hearing impaired will increase in number and demand for my services will increase with it as I teach interpreters for the hearing impaired.
In thinking of how critical thinking, or the disciplined and consistent application of rational thinking about problems and the results of application of various solutions to these problems, ties in with adaptive leadership, one must come to the conclusion that a leader may utilize his or her mind to solve problems that would be encountered in a leadership position. As a teacher one is called upon to lead and motivate students to think about and learn a discipline.
If one is not a "born leader," one may become one by taking on the challenges of leadership and learning techniques for motivating and inspiring one's students, as well as facing the challenges which one faces in dealing with administrators, organizations and paperwork. As change creates resistance, so the courses that one chooses to take during one's education must include learning leadership and adaptive skills. It is difficult to learn how to motivate individuals to adapt to new methods and break old habits; individuals may resist change, but a good leader can inspire them to do it and teach them how (CLA, p.1).
