Introduction

In an increasingly globalized world, it is important for leaders to be aware of the role that culture plays in shaping both individual and collective identity. Only by doing so can they hope to build a truly global community. This paper will discuss the importance of a global leaders self-integration and its relationship to self/cultural identity. It will also describe the importance of understanding self-complexity theory as a global leader.

Global Leaders Self-Integration and the Relationship to Self or Cultural Identity

Global leaders should be well-rounded and self-aware individuals. They need to be able to understand and empathize with people from a variety of backgrounds, and they must be able to communicate effectively with others. Having a sense of cultural identity can assist toward these aims. As Brannen (n.d.) explains, a cultural identity is simply a sense of belonging to a group of people. Having a sense of belonging should not make one exclusive, however: on the contrary, it should empower a global leader to be more inclusive, open to others of different cultures, and supportive of cross-cultural management and global mobility (Caligiuri & Bonache, n.d.). But to achieve real success in this aim, one must have intelligence and tact in the pursuit, as Michailova et al. (n.d.) point out (p. 19).
