Social-Cultural Framework

Sociocultural approaches to learning and development: a Vygotskian framework

In this article the authors discuss how both social and individual processes work together to produce knowledge. The article looks at three things that make up the framework: the social sources that cause development as an individual, the symbols (such as language) that cause development, and genetics. All three are very important in how human beings develop a sense of self and knowledge about all things. The main theme, however, is how much of a role culture and language play in the development of human beings. There are implications at the end of the article that this may have some relevance where teaching and classroom learning are concerned. This is due to the collaboration that often goes on between teacher and student to help make the learning experience more complete. All of this interaction is just as essential to knowledge as the information that the students are provided with. There are many sources that are examined so that the opinions of others can be discussed openly, and the different sociocultural approaches are considered and reviewed so that there is an understanding of not only what the authors are trying to say but how they base their position on careful study and examination of the ideas and beliefs of others.
