This document presents the importance of social Stories as an effective social skill tool. The purpose of this paper is to identify a social skills deficit for a child with autism and write an individualized social story. The social story chosen for this document is called the "Karate Social Story" and it teaches the child ways to adapt to the social situation of learning karate.
Karate Social Story
Some days are good for being with friends.
Some days I try to learn my best.
It is fun to be my best.
Sometimes I play games to have fun.
I like to have fun!
One game kids enjoy playing is Karate.
One activity I like is Karate.
Some days I see the people that practice Karate.
Sometimes I like to join in and play.
I like Karate!
Karate can be great fun!
When I see Karate practiced, it is part of a team.
When I watch the team work together to do Karate, I am happy.
I like to be happy.
When I do Karate I am part of a team.
I am happy when I do Karate with the team.
My friends are called a club and practice Karate.

My Karate Team has a home called a Dojo.

Sometimes during Karate I can stand on one leg longer than my friends.
Sometimes in Karate we learn how to kick.
Sometimes we will kick the lower leg for practice.
Sometimes we will kick at the middle to learn how to balance.
During Karate we learn how to keep our balance while we kick.
Sometimes when we kick we fall down.
When we fall in Karate practice, our friends are there to help us up.
In Karate all of my team is my friend.
I like my Karate Team.
I like my friends on my Karate Team.
The Teacher is called Sensei.
When we listen to Sensei we get to play games.
When we play Karate Games we have fun.
I like to play games.

When I practice my Karate I get to partner and practice together with my friends.
In Karate while we work together, we both learn to get better at Karate.

When I practice Karate I have to listen to Sensei.
When I practice Karate I cannot hit or kick my partner.
This means that I learn to stop before I hit or kick my friends.
Together me and my friends learn Karate.

This means that I get to kick and punch.
In Karate we kick with the balls of our feet, not our toes.
What this means is I do not kick with my toes, I curl my toes back to kick.
I always attempt my Karate kick with the balls of my feet.

In Karate our Team all wear the same uniform.
In Karate our team uniform is a white GI.
During Karate we all wear our uniform.
