Motivational strategy for cashiers and corporate incentives.

It is obvious that the cashiers of StopNShopNow require a different approach to motivation. Although their position is associated with numerous risks that must be taken into consideration, the job requirements and expectations are not high. Given the fact that this position does not rely on creativity and innovation that could be stimulated by financial and other types of motivation, it is recommended to install an effective discipline and punishment system. In order to achieve the objectives related to the staff in this category, positive reinforcement is also necessary. In addition to this, it is recommended to establish clear rules for promotions and to present them to cashiers.

Regarding corporate incentives, the company must develop a motivational plan based on several aspects. According to McGregor's motivational theory, the company's employees could significantly improve its productive efficiency in an environment that encourages and supports self-development (Accel Team, 2010). In other words, the company should invest in training programs, and in bonuses or commissions for employees that exceed their performance objectives.

The fact that cashiers at StopNShopNow allow themselves to take unscheduled absences on a frequent basis, to not meet the customer service quality standards established by the company, and to avoid activities like ensuring cleanliness within the stores, reveal the fact that they significantly lack discipline at the workplace. As a result, the company should intensify its efforts into increasing the discipline level. In order to achieve this objective, it is recommended to intensify controls during the busiest shifts. These controls should be performed by department managers. In addition to this, cashiers should only be allowed s limited number of motivated absences.

However, given the fact that the strategy mentioned above might determine some of the cashiers to feel uncomfortable at the workplace, it is recommended to support it with positive reinforcement. This should also be performed by the department managers and by shift supervisors. The company should also discuss with cashiers advancement opportunities. If they know that by doing their job well, by meeting the quality standards imposed by the company, by improving customer service, helping reduce theft, and maintain cleanliness at normal levels, they could be advanced to higher positions, they might find this stimulating and might improve their behavior. However, the company should also make it clear that behavior that does not sustain the requirements of StopNShopNow cannot be tolerated.

The cashiers' situation is not the only area that must be improved. It seems that the motivational strategy within the entire company must be improved. A great way of motivating important employees that have potential is represented by investing in training programs. If the company sends some of its employees to such training programs, they would consider that the company is interested in their career development and improving their skills and abilities. Therefore, such employees will be characterized by higher motivation in rewarding the company with their improved activity. This strategy is also intended to improve employee retention.
