Basic Materials to Support the Initiative

Maintaining an outdoor protest for 100,000 people presents various logistical challenges. First, New York City is currently experiencing a cold period and a recent snow storm. Naturally, maintaining warmth is a critical factor required for both comfort and safety. Dressing for the weather requires wearing several layers because that is more effective than relying on a single heavy coat. Hats and gloves are essential because a disproportionate amount of body heat is lost from the extremities. Water and food are also critical because it would be impossible to maintain a 10-day presence without them. Because the event requires 'round the clock presence, sleeping bags, sleeping mats, and tents are also important to protect participants from the elements.

Materials Necessary for 10 Classes

Day One Class -- Drawing Day: The recommended materials include pencils, pencil sharpeners, and sketch pads.

Day Two Class -- Poetry Day: The recommended materials include Norton's Anthology of Poetry and a notebook.

Day Three Class -- Yoga Day: No additional materials are required because participants already have their sleeping mats that can double as yoga mats.

Day Four Class -- Jogging Day: The recommended materials include running shoes, a pair of sweatpants and sweatshirt that can be worn instead of the warm layers and then removed after they become wet with perspiration after the class. A waist-pack is recommended to store valuables during the class.

Day Five Class -- Music Day: No additional materials are required for this class besides those recommended for other classes, such as pencils and notebooks.

Day Six Class -- Silent Up: The only recommended materials are a book that you have always been meaning to read but have never had a chance.

Day Seven Class -- History: The only materials recommended are a copy of Howard Zinn's a People's History of the United States.

Day Eight -- Writing Day: No additional materials are recommended because participants already have pencils and notebooks for other classes.

Day Nine -- Reading Day: No additional materials are recommended because participants already have a copy of a book they have always wanted to read.

Day Ten -- Open Mind Day: No additional materials are recommended. Participants are encouraged to trade their books recommended for Days Six and Nine with other participants whose books they would never have chosen to read and would never have read otherwise.

Transportation

The New York City Metropolitan Area has an extensive public transportation system. Subways travel from all four outer-boroughs into Manhattan and from other areas of Manhattan to the Union Square Area. Every subway station and bus stop maintains posted maps depicting the exact route and all transfer options from every location to Union Square.
