Its mission is to provide only the highest quality rehabilitation services for substance-abusing individuals. Its mission includes healing not only those suffering from this form of mental illness to help them rid themselves of their addictions, but also their families and loved ones in the process.

It doesn't consider its mission to be complete until and unless its employees have helped all those involved in the addict's life better themselves by ridding all concerned individuals of the negative effects of this chronic, progressive, and treatable disease. To more effectively treat addicts and their loved ones, the SAD has embraced a multi-faceted approach for both substance abuse prevention and intervention and treatment when prevention fails in Southeast Texas.

The organization positively impacts more than 60,000 lives each year, including not only the abusers themselves but their family members, many of whom suffer just as much as the individuals themselves. Comprised of 8 different initiatives, the Substance Abuse Division is dedicated to providing help, hope, and healing to our neighbors in need. Addiction is a complex disease which manifests differently in different individuals, which makes identifying the root causes a challenge for substance abuse counselors.

In support of our mission, therefore, our goal is to train staff to recognize the underlying causes of the individual's addictions, focusing on both the physical and psychological ones. This training will cover screening and assessments, case management, clinical supervision, and maintaining related clinical documentation. Specific functional areas in which we'll train counselors include Cannabis Youth Treatment, Seeking Safety for specialized females, applicable electronic client record systems, and motivational interviewing techniques. Ongoing counseling training will cover assisting substance-dependent individuals to recognize their addiction(s) and learn to deal with them.

They train counselors to work with them both one-on-one and in groups to confront their problems. Where counseling proves inadequate, they teach staff members to refer the individuals needing treatment to medical professionals such as psychologists and/or psychiatrists for more advanced, in-depth therapy. They'll also learn how to recognize positive results which can justify providing the addict with outpatient vs. inpatient therapy.

The training coordinator uses state of the art training techniques to conduct continuing education classes and other mandatory credentialing training for counselors in such areas as HIV prevention, screening, and treatment, clinical supervision and documentation, screening and assessments, case management, drugs in the workplace, new employee orientations, quality improvement plans and self-evaluation of program needs. He has been called upon to train Child Protective Service personnel, Foster Grandparents, State Workforce Commission employees, and County Probation officers. Within the past 3 years, the coordinator has trained over 700 people.

They also assist service providers in the development of required policies and procedures and provide guidance to staff during the review of compliance with state and federal guidelines.

Areas of training and support in pursuit of this goal include planning, developing, and providing training as part of staff development programs; assessing the effectiveness of methods such as classroom and on-the-job training, conferences and workshops; developing testing and evaluation procedures; arranging for ongoing technical training and personal development classes for staff members; monitoring, evaluating and recording the effectiveness of training activities and programs; assessing training needs through surveys, interviews with employees, interest groups, or consultation with managers and instructors; and training using a variety of instructional techniques such as group discussions, simulations, role playing, team exercises, lectures and videos; select and assign trainers; and finally, develop.
