What Makes a Good Question
Q. Why is attention important in social interactions, and how can we use attention to build better relationships with others?
Burkeman says that curiosity is the path to fulfillment. He is basing that argument on the book Curious? by Todd Kashdan. The point is that unless we pay attention to others, we are unlikely to have the kind of fulfilling engagement and social interaction that brings happiness in life.
Likewise, Hari writes in Stolen Focus, that because we are attention-deprived by addictions to technology we cannot relate to others and thus go through life bumping our noses into reality without ever really realizing where we are, who we are, or what we are doing.
Odell, on the other hand, talks about the relationship between discipline and attention in How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy. Her point is attention should be purposeful and intentional.
Foer takes an almost fatalistic approach to attention when he says, “Being attentive to the needs of others might not be the point of life, but it is the work of life. It can be messy, and painful, and almost impossibly difficult. But it is not something we give. It is what we get in exchange for having to die.”
These writers show that there is plenty of research out there to draw on to answer this question.
At the same time, there is clearly more than one perspective on the matter. Burkeman argues that we need to be curious and to pay attention to others to find fulfillment. Hari concurs but emphasizes that technology is a major distraction from this. Odell picks up on the distraction part of technology but emphasizes that we need to be mindful of the way in which technology deliberately tries to get our attention. Foer on the hand, talks about how it is impossible to really know how to pay attention to others or in what way is best to do so and that we often use tech as a way to avoid dealing with that reality. He uses the story of whether or not he should comfort a crying teenage stranger in the park as a launch pad for his discussion—but the others are talking more about self-fulfillment, whereas he is talking about how to connect with or support others. So there are some differences on perspectives here.
Reflection
I would say that my question good question because it prompts one to consider the role of attention in social interactions, which is an often overlooked aspect of our social behavior. Attention, it might be said, is essential in building and maintaining healthy relationships with others, as it helps us to focus on important cues, listen actively, and understand others' needs and perspectives. But it might also be said that without attention we cannot actually ever understand others. But how do we give or pay attention? What if there is a cost associated with it?
By exploring this topic, we can gain a deeper understanding of how attention impacts our social interactions, and learn strategies for improving our attentional control in social contexts. Additionally, this question highlights the importance of attention in building emotional intelligence, which is crucial for success in both personal and professional relationships. It can also incorporate aspects of tech-attachment and addiction to see if these issues are preventing us or helping us in terms of giving attention to others.
