Manual Handling: Transfer of Patient From Bed to Chair
The objective of this study is to examine the procedure of transferring a patient from the bed to a chair. A set of guidelines will be developed accompanied by rationale using evidence form three sources. The guidelines will be matched with a set of digital photographs of the step-by-step performance.
The following steps are included in the procedure of transferring a patient from a hospital bed to a chair:
(1) Place the chair next to be head of the bed and lock the chair;
(2) Place non-skid slippers on the patient's feet;
(3) Apply the transfer belt;
(4) Put bed in low position;
(5) Lock the bed;
(6) Assist patient to position near the side of the bed
(7) Face the patient with their feet and knees braced against the nurse's feet and knees;
(8) Bend hips nd knees while holding onto the transfer belt.
(9) Tell the patient to place their arms around the nurse between the waist and shoulders;
(10) Ask patient to stand as the nurse moves to an upright position through straightening of hips and legs;
(11) Allows patient to steady himself or herself;
(12) Tells the patient to pivot and turn with nurse in the direction of the chair;
(13) Assist the patient with positioning him or herself with a degree of importance attached to use of the object.
(14) Tell patient to flex their hips and knees as they lower themselves to the chair; and (15) Assist the patient to a comfortable position in the chair.
