¶ … Megaprojects First Process The first process that will be discussed is the digital design technology to support, construction, integration, and maintenance activities. The technologies used in this phase operated on two levels. On one level, they addressed the co-ordination of design, construction and integration, while on a different level, the technology was used for the virtual testing of different components and systems.
The single model environment (SME) that was used in this case was aim to help overcome several important challenges, primarily the need to be able to exchange information in real time. At the same time, the SME would permit a more realistic understanding of the design, with additional simulations that applied to overcoming this challenge. One of the challenges that SME approached was digital vertical integration.
The idea of digital vertical integration is in line with what has been previously discussed in the previous paragraphs: in a construction project of the size and importance of the Heathrow Terminal, it became essential to have all actors cooperate actively on the given design. Besides the fact that information needed to flow between these actors, accessibility was also an important challenge. One challenge that remains in this phase in terms of moving the project into operations is the implementation of knowledge in the organization.
Applying technology in the design phase through SME appears to solve several of the communication and cooperation challenges of the project, but implementing the SME requires the implementation of knowledge, namely it requires people to be able to use the technology and understand how to operate it to its most efficient way.
