These are product-oriented methods of measuring the value of an education. Measuring the value of the 'process' by how many students get to take small classes, participate in a meaningful way in extracurriculars, and the student to faculty ratio may be the method of measuring quality used by a student less concerned with dollars and cents and future earning potential. The degree to which future undergraduates prioritize the academic, vocational, and personal or social aspects of going to college will create a unique value tree for every student. While most students want some sort of a good social experience, their academic interests might dominate, while others will be more drawn to school with vibrant sports teams and a strong Greek system. The two are not mutually exclusive -- good schools can have strong, spirited social environments, like Duke University. But if the student's hierarchy of needs is not satisfied, the student will be unhappy,...

...

If the student does not feel he or she is being prepared for medical school, or is anxious about taking too many loans, this anxiety will interfere with the educational process. An academically oriented student will feel lost at a school where most undergraduates coast through their classes, a student interested in sports may despise a small, intense liberal arts Division III institution like Swarthmore College.
There is no one right decision: otherwise there would not be so many universities across the nation and all over the world. The student must know his or her own needs, and know him or herself to make a good decision when finding the right place to go to school. If a student lies to him or herself about his or her need for a good social life and forces him or herself to go to an academically driven school, that student will flounder, regardless of his or her level of intelligence.

While Friedman may have provided a plausible explanation as to why the rush to join the globalization bandwagon, he, however, fails to explain the politics behind such policy actions of nation-states. That the more powerful, developed nation-states which have more resources at their disposal to turn international economic policies that influence domestic macroeconomic policies to their favor is lost in the author's discussion. He is keen to caution that

But the supply far outstrips demand, Europeans are finding. The climate of this marketplace itself is decidedly cloudy. Advance prices have plunged by half. At this point, one shouldn't portray it as a liquid, vibrant market," said Atle C. Christiansen of PointCarbon, a Norway-based research firm (Climate, 2004).
