Water Supply:

There are two basic sources of water for human consumption are water from a well to meet the needs of an individual residence and municipal water systems. The municipal water systems that offer clean water to a wide range of commercial property and domestic use buildings. While there are various kinds of water systems that may be included in a home, at least one or more water systems can be used in any given time. In addition to the quality of water in a specific area, the kind of water system can determine whether additional water systems are required in a home. As large water systems take water into and outside a house, the smaller water systems bring changes to the water after it has entered a house or home. Therefore, main home or large water systems are utilized to take the inflow of water into a house or home.

The two most common types or kinds of water systems to supply water are well water and city water systems. The city water systems basically entail the use of a large tank from which the water is piped into a building, home, or apartment that travels through a meter to weigh the amount of utilized water and charged to the customer ("What are the Different Types of Water Systems?" n.d.). Water from these systems sometimes contains additives from water treatment systems including sterilization and fluoride chemicals like chlorine in order to maintain water quality. While the chemicals can affect the taste of the water, the water may also be treated in attempts to eliminate metals that naturally occur in ground water.

On the contrary, water well systems may be used by the community as a source of water to homes or as an individual well on the property of a homeowner. In cases where the water well is installed on a personal private property, a water filtration system could be the most appropriate method for removing minerals like calcium and iron from the water. This process involves the use of various filtration systems between the holding water tank and the flow of the water into the house. The homeowner can also use extra water filters on the kitchen faucet or refrigerator to ensure that water or ice dispensed via the door is of high or premium quality. The other water filtration or treatment systems include a water softener or a hot water heater. The water softener is used to lessen the amount of soap and shampoo required since a minimal amount can generate as much soapsuds when the water lacks calcium. In contrast, hot water systems are basically used to warm the water through various heating elements before the warm water enters a home.

The advantages of using the city water system is that these systems can serve an entire community more efficiently and their ability to produce water of premium quality. However, the city water systems have several disadvantages such as the possibility of the additives used to affect the taste of the water and inability of individuals to manage the water supply or source. On the contrary, water well has the advantage of enabling community members to manage the water themselves. Nonetheless, the disadvantage of these water systems is that it time consuming and energy consuming to treat the water.

Calculations:

There are some necessary calculations or water supply information that are important to firefighters in the community including the maximum daily consumption, the required gpm flow, and the minimum amount of water storage. For this community, the maximum daily consumption is determined by calculating the average community daily water demand which is determined by the average daily water demand multiplied by the number of people ("Water Demand," n.d.). Since the average daily water demand is 100 gallons per person per day, the Average Community Daily Water Demand = Average daily water demand * Number of People

= 100*25,000

= 2,500,000 gallons/day.

To determine the gpm flow that the water system must be able to supply for community, it's important to determine the maximum hourly water demand and divide it by 60.

Maximum hourly water demand = 3*(Average Community Daily Water Demand)
