¶ … Workforce Trends and Employee Responsive Programs The past few decades have brought about tremendous changes within the business community. Examples in this sense are for instance constituted by incremental demands on the part of the customers or the incremental emphasis on marketing efforts, social responsibility programs or environmental stability. Another example on the list is constituted by the changes in the human resources. With the Industrial Revolution, the structured workforce was initially constructed. At those times nevertheless, the employees were exploited in numerous manners.

They were for instance forced to work long hours, in unsanitary conditions and for wages they could barely live on. As time progressed however, the employees became organized in unions which better safeguarded their rights. After numerous conflicts, the legislations began to change in favor of the employee. Working hours were limited, working conditions were improved and minimum wages were set. By the turn of the twentieth century, the workforce had metamorphosed from the force operating the machines, into the most valuable organizational asset.

Today, the staff members are cherished as the resources able to attain organizational goals. Economic agents have reached a situation in which they no longer compete just for customer shares, but also for the most skilled, committed and capable staff members. In order to attract and retain these employees, firms across the world are developing and implementing a series of employee responsive programs. These programs are being developed in order to better respond to the continually changing needs of the staff members.

Some examples in this sense are constituted by: The popularization of adoptions, including international ones, which require increased attention from the employee The increasing number of mono parental families The growing numbers of women working outside the household The incremental emphasis on education and professional formation as the path to a better life The aging of the baby boomers which means not only reduced workforce and incremental pressures on the state budgets, but also more elderly responsibilities for the working individuals The advent of technology which forces the individuals to develop along, and so on.

The list of changes could go on for pages, but the bottom line is that the world is changing and the employee responsive programs are being developed and implemented in order to allow employers to integrate these changes and help employees cope with them. These programs have the primary merit of allowing the individuals to better balance their personal and professional lives. This subsequently materializes in better satisfied staff members, who are better able to enhance their performances and support the company in reaching its overall objectives.

At a personal level, the employee responsive program which offered the highest levels of satisfaction was the flexible working schedule. As mentioned before, it allows for the balance of professional and personal responsibilities and it creates satisfied staff members who better complete.
