Adolescent Sexual Behavior: Key Research Findings

~4 min read 4 sections Health · Adolescent Health
Abstract

This paper summarizes and analyzes key findings from a RAND research brief titled "Understanding the Sexual Behaviors of Adolescents," based on surveys conducted at a Los Angeles public high school. The paper examines several interrelated topics: the misconception that virginity equates to sexual inexperience, adolescents' reluctance to consult physicians about sexual health despite expressing a desire for such guidance, the impact of condom availability programs on protected sex practices, and the relationship between substance use and increased sexual activity among teenagers. The author draws connections between the research findings and broader implications for adolescent health education and access to professional health information.

Key Takeaways
  • Introduction: Virginity and Sexual Experience Among Teens: Virginity does not equal sexual inexperience among adolescents
  • Adolescents and Physician Consultation on Sexual Health: Teens want health guidance but distrust physician confidentiality
  • The Impact of Condom Availability on Teen Sexual Behavior: Free condoms increased protection without increasing sexual activity
  • Substance Use and Its Relationship to Adolescent Sexual Activity: Drug and alcohol use linked to higher teen sexual activity

What makes this paper effective

  • The paper moves systematically through distinct findings from a single source, giving each finding its own focused discussion rather than lumping them together.
  • It identifies a counterintuitive central finding — that virgins can have significant sexual experience — and uses it to frame the rest of the analysis.
  • The author connects research findings to real-world implications, such as the value of improved adolescent access to healthcare professionals.

Key academic technique demonstrated

The paper demonstrates source analysis by unpacking the methodology behind each reported finding — for example, noting that condom distribution data came from a school-based program followed by a survey one year later. This habit of tying conclusions back to their methods grounds the analysis in evidence rather than assertion.

Structure breakdown

The paper is organized into four thematic sections, each addressing a distinct finding from the RAND brief: (1) the distinction between virginity and sexual inexperience; (2) adolescent reluctance to seek physician guidance; (3) the effects of condom availability programs; and (4) the connection between substance use and sexual behavior. A works cited entry closes the paper.

Introduction: Virginity and Sexual Experience Among Teens

The RAND research brief "Understanding the Sexual Behaviors of Adolescents" elucidates a number of interrelated facts about the sexual activity of teenagers. The most salient of these is the notion that there is a distinct difference between teens who are virgins and those who have had no sexual experience whatsoever. The research expressly indicates that teenagers who have not had vaginal intercourse may still be sexually active in other ways. Other methods of sexual activity that teens regularly engaged in while still identifying as virgins include oral sex and anal sex. Therefore, one of the biggest misconceptions that the article reveals is that virgins are sexually inactive. They can be, but virgins may also have quite a wide range of sexual experience. The primary methodology used to determine this finding involved surveying a group of students at a Los Angeles public high school in 1992.

Adolescents and Physician Consultation on Sexual Health

Another significant aspect of the study pertains to the involvement of doctors in clarifying aspects of sexuality for teenagers. According to the article, many of the teenagers surveyed were unaware that sexual activities not involving conventional vaginal intercourse could still transmit sexually transmitted diseases. However, many adolescents expressed marked reservations about consulting a physician regarding these and other matters related to sexuality, largely because they believed such physicians could not be trusted to keep their disclosures confidential.

What is particularly notable about this finding is that "more than half the students surveyed, both virgins and non-virgins, said that they would find it very helpful to talk with a doctor about topics such as avoiding contracting AIDS or other STDs and preventing pregnancy" (No author). The implications of this finding suggest that adolescents could make more informed decisions about their sexual activities if they had greater access to information from healthcare professionals — a conclusion that appears well-supported by the research.
