What makes this paper effective

  • Uses direct quotations from primary and secondary sources to substantiate each claim, lending credibility to the analysis of Apple's supply chain.
  • Maintains a clear thematic structure — moving from procurement to materials to operations — that mirrors the actual flow of a supply chain, making the argument easy to follow.
  • Balances praise for Apple's supply chain achievements with honest discussion of its failures, such as the Foxconn controversy, avoiding a one-sided treatment.

Key academic technique demonstrated

The paper demonstrates effective use of source integration: each body section introduces a concept, supports it with a cited quotation or paraphrase, and then connects the evidence back to the broader argument about Apple's competitive success. This pattern of claim–evidence–analysis is a foundational technique in academic writing at the undergraduate level.

Structure breakdown

The paper opens with a brief introduction establishing Apple's brand stature and previewing the paper's scope. Three analytical sections follow — procurement, materials, and supply chain operations — each organized around a distinct aspect of the supply chain. A short conclusion synthesizes findings and offers forward-looking observations about Apple's competitive position. The structure is compact but logically complete.

Introduction

Today, Apple, Inc. is the world's largest company in terms of brand value, with nearly twice as much value at $154.1 billion compared to its nearest competitor, Google, at $82.5 billion (The list, 2016). Founded in 1976 by Steven Paul Jobs, Ronald Gerald Wayne, and Stephen G. Wozniak, the company is currently headquartered in Cupertino, California, and remains an industry leader in the information technology sectors in which it competes (Company profile, 2016). To determine how Apple achieved this remarkable level of success, this paper reviews the relevant literature to provide an overview of the company's procurement practices, the materials involved, and a description of its supply chain operations. A summary of the research and important findings are provided in the conclusion.

Procurement Practices and Supplier Standards

An integral part of the supply chain, procurement refers to the processes by which enterprises secure the materials they need to produce products and services (Rossetti & Dooley, 2010). Apple's website emphasizes the company's commitment to securing suppliers that conform to its high environmental and employment standards (Apple and procurement, 2016). Specifically, the company's procurement policies state: "Apple requires each of its suppliers to meet the highest standards for all goods and services. Our requirements include a commitment to rigorous quality assurance. [S]uppliers must be committed, as we are, to ensuring the highest standards of social responsibility" (Apple and procurement, 2016, para. 3).

Notwithstanding this commitment to responsible procurement and the company's remarkable track record of success, Apple has experienced significant problems in this area in recent years. Noel (2014) reports that "Apple has a long track record of supplier issues — most specifically, its problems with Foxconn that came to light in late 2013" (p. 10). At the time, Foxconn manufactured and assembled most of Apple's products but became the focus of a federal investigation concerning serious violations of labor laws, which resulted in charges against its executives (Noel, 2014). In order to avoid recurrences of this type, Noel (2014) recommends that Apple improve its procurement standards and vetting process for suppliers to obtain the materials it needs for its supply chain operations.

Materials and Value-Added Activities

To its credit, Apple has modeled the way for other companies with respect to material procurement by reducing waste and promoting value-added activities throughout its supply chain. Bharadwaj (2015) reports that "three of the primary value-adding activities — inbound and outbound logistics and operations — represent the major activities in a supply chain [and] Apple [has] been at the forefront of supply chain management" (p. 100). This achievement is even more noteworthy given the vast array of materials required across the company's far-flung manufacturing sites and supply chain partners. Not only does Apple design, manufacture, and market a wide range of products, but the company also distributes those products through a network of retailers, wholesalers, and jobbers (Company profile, 2016), making the need for efficient supply chain management even more critical.

Conclusion

The research showed that in terms of brand value, Apple, Inc. is the largest corporation in the world today. The research was also consistent in showing that the company achieved this level of success through its efficient supply chain operations, which span the globe yet remain focused on eliminating waste and adding value at every opportunity. It is reasonable to conclude that the company gained valuable lessons from the procurement difficulties with Foxconn in 2013 and will ensure that suppliers are more carefully evaluated in the future. It is also reasonable to conclude that, given its proven track record of aligning consumer demand with technological innovation, Apple will remain a major leader in the information technology field well into the 21st century.
