There are specific cloud computing software solutions that cater to particular market or customer needs — including customer relationship management, human resource management, enterprise planning, and many other specialized fields. Indeed, many software vendors are increasingly switching to a cloud-based delivery strategy as a replacement for traditional distribution models.
Since cloud computing functions as a utility, vendors typically provide the underlying infrastructure and software required to establish remote cloud systems. Vendors enable customers to access their data from any suitable location, charging clients for the services provided and effectively eliminating the cost of erecting an independent cloud infrastructure within the organization. The vendor provides software as a service (SaaS), and because the software operates on a multitenant basis, many customers can use the same software simultaneously — an arrangement that offsets the vendor's financial inputs and supports their profitability as well (Radack S., 2012, p. 4).
Cost-Related Benefits of Cloud Computing
One of the most compelling reasons for an organization to host its data on a remote central server is the resulting reduction in computing costs. Cloud computing enables organizations to access large volumes of software, data usage, and data storage services at a minimal upfront cost. Organizations that utilize cloud computing solutions avoid capital expenditure on infrastructure and hardware, as those costs are borne by the vendor companies who invest in such ventures (Macias F. & Thomas G., 2011).
A further cost benefit is the transfer of infrastructure maintenance costs to the vendor. As Apostu A. et al. (2014b) indicate, firms using cloud computing minimize their costs of maintaining and regularly upgrading both hardware and software. The vendor assumes responsibility for ensuring that servers run the latest software and best-available hardware, thereby safeguarding the customer's data.
Many organizations have also opted for cloud computing because it eliminates the licensing fees and annual maintenance costs associated with traditional software. Rather than paying for software that sits idle on organizational computers, most cloud vendors bill on a monthly or quarterly basis according to actual usage. This arrangement is typically cheaper and more cost-effective, since organizations pay only for the time they actively use the software.
The benefits of cloud computing extend beyond direct savings. The technology allows new applications to be implemented more quickly than traditional formats permit, because cloud vendors maintain large capacity for redundancy and can provide scalability on demand. This ensures that organizational operations remain at an optimum level at all times, supported by the vendor's software. Vendors also guarantee server uptimes, maintain backup platforms for use during outages, and assure customers of data recovery processes — effectively removing the burden and expense of investing in in-house backup hardware and software (Intel, 2016). These represent costs that are eliminated from the annual organizational budget, which is why more organizations are choosing cloud computing for their operations, storage, and software support.
With the adoption of cloud computing, the IT skill set required within an organization necessarily changes. As applications migrate to the cloud, fewer staff are needed to install, configure, and maintain software on individual machines. The demand for personnel to maintain hardware also decreases. The IT team can be reduced to those individuals responsible for implementation support and end-user training, cutting costs associated with maintaining a large team for traditional software operations (Lee, L. Cloud computing has also introduced greater work flexibility and portability. In traditional systems, relevant software was installed on office computers and accessible only during office hours. Cloud computing transcends such limitations: employees can work from anywhere with an internet connection, since the software is hosted on a central server rather than on a personal device. This has been shown to increase productivity among employees and managers who prefer to work beyond standard office hours, and it allows those traveling domestically or internationally to remain connected to organizational workflows (Mirashe S.P. & Kalyankar N.V., 2010, p. 90).

It drives change and innovation across all data- and communication-dependent technologies, including mobile devices, computers, and the internet.
