What makes this paper effective

  • Uses structured analytical frameworks (EFE matrix, IFE matrix, and Competitive Profile Matrix) to ground qualitative observations in quantifiable comparisons.
  • Balances internal and external analysis, moving logically from competitor mapping to strategic recommendations before turning inward to examine AT&T's financials and mission.
  • Grounds abstract strategic claims in concrete examples, such as the TiVo compatibility issue and the NFL Sunday Ticket exclusivity deal, making the argument tangible and specific.

Key academic technique demonstrated

The paper demonstrates applied strategic management analysis, using industry-standard matrices to synthesize competitive data. By pairing an external factor evaluation (EFE) with an internal factor evaluation (IFE) and a Competitive Profile Matrix, it models the kind of layered environmental scanning expected in business strategy coursework — moving from macro environment to firm-level resource assessment.

Structure breakdown

The paper opens with a brief introduction establishing DirecTV's market position, then surveys the competitive landscape before identifying opportunities and threats. Two matrices (EFE and Competitive Profile) provide structured snapshots of external conditions. A section on industry trends converts the analysis into actionable recommendations. The internal analysis covers the AT&T acquisition, corporate financials, mission and vision, and strategic weaknesses. An IFE matrix benchmarks financial ratios, and the conclusion synthesizes findings with forward-looking commentary.

Introduction

DirecTV is a major player in a field that is changing and shifting every day. The entertainment and television world has begun to move away from the cable television sphere that DirecTV and other satellite providers share. DirecTV has only one direct competitor, but it faces a large number of indirect competitors, including cable TV outlets, streaming services, and DVD/Blu-Ray rental companies. This essay conducts an environmental analysis of DirecTV, examining both the internal and external environments in which the company exists and operates. While DirecTV is well-positioned for now, it must be ready for the entertainment and television marketplace of tomorrow.

Competitive Landscape

The direct competitor mentioned in the introduction is Dish Network. While that company is not breaking records in satellite revenue, it has been notably forward-thinking: Dish is the company behind Sling TV and Blockbuster Online. As cable television seems to be fading, Sling TV allows people to watch television shows remotely. Its app also allows users to access cable and news network content without taking on a traditional cable subscription. As for Blockbuster Online, the brick-and-mortar stores that Blockbuster operated for years are long gone, and the online service pales in comparison to competitors such as Vudu, Amazon Video, and Netflix. Even so, it demonstrates that Dish is not unaware of the future of entertainment and television.

Among cable providers, there are Cox Communications, Time Warner Cable, and Comcast, to name a few. Comcast is an outlier in the current market, having merged with one of the three major legacy broadcast networks, NBC Universal. Time Warner has similar ties, though they are far less prominent and resource-rich. This brings the discussion to streaming services. Netflix and Amazon have exploded in size and scope, Walmart acquired Vudu on its rise, and Hulu has become a stronghold for viewers who keep up with their television shows. Blockbuster Online remains a presence but is far weaker than the others.

DirecTV, however, is not without its own advantages. It offers the same premium cable channels that cable companies carry and is the exclusive home of NFL Sunday Ticket. Recognizing the changing television landscape, DirecTV has made the NFL Sunday Ticket available on platforms beyond satellite-connected televisions — a significant and necessary shift, since the prior arrangement was too restrictive.

Opportunities and Threats

DirecTV has meaningful opportunities. Unlike Blockbuster, which had the chance to acquire a nascent Netflix for a comparatively small sum and failed to act, DirecTV has not yet missed the streaming wave entirely. One notable advantage is that DirecTV, along with Dish, is sometimes the only viable television option available. Anyone with an unobstructed view of the sky can receive satellite television, whereas many people in rural areas cannot get anything beyond over-the-air broadcast channels.

In terms of threats, streaming services and other new entertainment platforms are rapidly taking over the marketplace. A growing number of consumers are "cutting the cord," and this trend affects satellite providers like DirecTV and Dish just as much as it affects cable companies. DirecTV will retain niche markets — particularly where no other viable option exists — but the cord-cutting trend cannot be ignored. One additional concern is that certain entertainment options are directly incompatible with DirecTV, and the company appears largely uninterested in addressing this. For example, customers who have DirecTV and wish to use TiVo are effectively out of luck, as the two services are not compatible without an RF blaster and offer no true integration. While many DVR users may not notice this limitation, it is a deal-breaker for a portion of the customer base.

EFE Matrix and Competitive Profile

The External Factor Evaluation (EFE) matrix below summarizes the key opportunities and threats facing DirecTV, weighted by importance and rated by the company's current response:

Opportunities

Adding Streaming — Weight: 20%, Rating: 4, Weighted Score: 0.80
Sports Broadcasting — Weight: 15%, Rating: 4, Weighted Score: 0.60
TiVo Integration — Weight: 10%, Rating: 3, Weighted Score: 0.30

Threats

Other Streaming Services — Weight: 20%, Rating: 5, Weighted Score: 1.00
Cord Cutters — Weight: 20%, Rating: 3, Weighted Score: 0.60
New Competitors — Weight: 15%, Rating: 1, Weighted Score: 0.15

The Competitive Profile Matrix (CPM) below compares DirecTV against its two most significant competitors on key success factors:

Critical Success Factor | DirecTV | Dish | Comcast

Brand Reputation: 7 | 6 | 8
Range of Products: 6 | 7 | 8
Customer Retention: 6 | 6 | 7

Conclusion

Reflecting on the IFE matrix, it is clear that AT&T consistently brings strong revenue into the business. However, the remaining major financial margins are less than ideal. AT&T's primary strength lies in its large and reliable revenue stream and its vast subscriber base. The company is not, however, pushing the envelope enough to generate stronger returns on investment or improve its overall financial ratios. If DirecTV and its parent company can refine their service offerings and give customers more options — including better streaming integration and improved compatibility with third-party devices — they will be better positioned to retain their existing customer base and attract new subscribers. The entertainment landscape will continue to shift, and the companies that adapt most effectively will be the ones that thrive.
