This paper examines the challenges that arise when working with a dissertation committee, focusing on two primary obstacles: contradictory philosophies or comments on single issues among committee members, and inconsistent recommendations or corrections on the same sections. The author proposes practical strategies for addressing each challenge, including establishing ideological consistency with the committee chair, aligning personal philosophical approaches with committee expectations, and treating contradictory feedback as an opportunity for deeper critical analysis. The paper emphasizes proactive communication, revision, and escalation to the dissertation chair when conflicts persist, positioning these challenges as manageable aspects of the dissertation process rather than insurmountable obstacles.
In the process of assembling a dissertation, it is essential to work collaboratively with the dissertation committee. This group of highly respected academicians and researchers will help produce a comprehensive document that not only contains accurate information and appropriate detail but is also presented in the form of an academic paper befitting a dissertation suitable for admission to an academic library. Achieving these goals requires continuous collaboration with a committee of expert scholars. However, this collaborative process will almost inevitably present several challenges to a student defending their dissertation.
One foreseeable challenge in working with the committee is the presentation of contradictory philosophies or comments on a single issue. This occurs when an approach to a given subject within the dissertation is viewed differently by two members, or when two committee members prefer different ways of tackling an issue (Jalongo, 2008). For instance, one member may favor a quantitative approach while another prefers qualitative methodology, creating tension around how to present or analyze key sections.
To address this challenge, I intend to take two approaches. First, I would identify the chairperson of my dissertation and discuss the composition of the committee to establish ideological consistency. It would be counterproductive to include a member who opposes a quantitative approach when the rest of the committee agrees on its use. Striving for consistency in ideology or philosophy within the committee will help expedite the process and reduce friction. Second, I will explain my philosophical approach to the committee for each section in an effort to align their perspective with my dissertation's direction before extensive revision becomes necessary.
