An EHR automates access to patient information and has the potential to streamline a physician's workflow. Electronic records can be shared across different healthcare settings, which benefits patients by eliminating the need to repeat tests that have already been performed. An EHR is designed to store data accurately and captures the state of a patient across time.

Advantages of EHR Systems

When an EHR is used properly, it leads to measurable improvement in the quality of care delivered to patients. It is the goal of each health institution to better the lives of its patients and clients. Using EHR makes this possible because communication is improved, patient information is easily accessible, and there is no risk of lost data or misplaced paperwork. There is also seamless sharing of information between providers within the same organization (Harle et al., 2016). This ensures that a provider does not need to wait for a physical file to be retrieved before attending to a patient, thereby reducing patient wait times. Clinical decision-making tools can be integrated into the EHR, assisting physicians in making accurate diagnoses.

EHRs eliminate the need for physical paperwork to be filled out for each patient. With electronic storage, all physical files are removed and data can be easily accessed at the touch of a button (Tiwari et al., 2018). The loss of patient records is also eliminated. In the past, it was not unusual for patient charts to be unavailable at a given time, which delayed care and negatively impacted patient outcomes. With EHR, a physician can access patient records remotely. Additionally, the physical space previously required to store paper files is freed up and can be repurposed (Tiwari et al., 2018).

This feature allows physicians to enter lab and imaging requests, prescriptions, and other orders electronically, reducing errors associated with handwriting (Harle et al., 2016). With this model, orders can be read clearly and acted upon promptly. Other physicians within the organization who are attending to the same patient also have access to these orders, reducing the likelihood of duplicate orders being placed (Tiwari et al., 2018).
