Even at the youth participation level, high school football carries serious risks: approximately 8% of youth football players (ages 5 to 14) are severely injured each year, resulting in more than 187,000 emergency room visits. When addressing the needs of ninth-grade players entering a football program, it is important to recognize that many will already have sustained a potentially serious injury.
