What makes this paper effective

  • Grounds its claims in primary source evidence, citing the Hilton 2004 Annual Report throughout to support specific figures and strategic assertions.
  • Moves logically from an overview of Hilton's business model to specific tactical examples, giving the argument a clear, cumulative structure.
  • Balances quantitative evidence (128 new properties in 2004, 22 million tracked customers, 50 Conrad units targeted) with qualitative analysis of strategic rationale.

Key academic technique demonstrated

This paper demonstrates the use of corporate primary sources — specifically an annual report — alongside trade press articles to triangulate evidence. Rather than relying on a single source, the author cross-references the company's own disclosures with industry journalism, lending credibility to each strategic claim and showing how different source types can reinforce one another.

Structure breakdown

The paper opens with a brief contextual introduction establishing Hilton's scale and the paper's purpose. The body is organized thematically around distinct expansion strategies: brand diversification and pricing tiers, data-driven customer relations, and the Conrad Hotels joint venture. A short conclusion synthesizes the key findings. The structure is straightforward and well-suited to a business strategy overview at the undergraduate level.

Introduction

Hilton Hotels Corporation is one of the largest hotel chains in the world, with over 500 locations across the globe. Over the last decade, the corporation expanded drastically and sustained a strong competitive advantage. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the tactics Hilton Hotels used in their quest to expand around the globe.

Hilton's Diversified Business Model

Hilton's business model utilizes a combination of hotel ownership, franchising and management, and timeshare operations (Annual Report 2004). Hilton-owned hotel brands include Hampton Inn, Conrad, Hampton Inn and Suites, DoubleTree, Embassy Suites, Hilton, Hilton Grand Vacations Club, Hilton Garden Inn, and Homewood Suites (Annual Report 2004). Each of these hotels has unique characteristics, the most significant being the cost of the rooms. For instance, guests would not pay as much to stay at an Embassy Suites as they would at a Hilton Grand Vacations Club location.

Part of the reason Hilton has been able to expand so dramatically is that the corporation offers a variety of accommodations at different price levels. This allows the company to attract a wide range of consumers and maintain a competitive advantage.

This diversity of accommodations, coupled with an increased demand for travel, produced tremendous financial success and new opportunities for expansion (Annual Report 2004). The increased travel is particularly evident in large cities frequented by business travelers. The 2004 Annual Report notes that Hilton hotels are able to command higher prices in these locations because competitive hotel presence is comparatively limited. The premium prices the company can charge in such markets further strengthen the corporation's capacity to expand (Annual Report 2004).

According to the 2004 Annual Report, the company made great strides that year alone. In 2004, Hilton Hotels Corporation added 128 new locations to its portfolio (Annual Report 2004). The company was outpacing the rest of the industry with respect to rooms under construction in the United States (Annual Report 2004). The report states:

"Among our 128 property additions in 2004 were full-service Hiltons in Omaha, Memphis and Colorado Springs, and Doubletree hotels in New York City, Niagara Falls and Orlando. Our two fastest-growing brands, Hampton Inn and Hilton Garden Inn (the latter is also the industry's fastest-growing brand), added 61 and 36 hotels to their respective systems in 2004 (Annual Report 2004)."

In addition to its hotel chains, the timeshare division of the company also expanded significantly. According to the report, the corporation's strategy is to focus timeshare development on locations that see high year-round travel traffic. The report notes that such a strategy allows the company to "effectively manage new growth opportunities in this business, while providing high-quality products and amenities for our customers (Annual Report 2004)."

Customer Relations and the OnQ Strategy

Customer relations have been essential to the successful expansion of the company. According to the article Data Driven Hospitality, it is no coincidence that Hilton became the most expansive company in the industry. The article asserts that this expansion has depended heavily on a customer relations strategy the company developed called OnQ (Kontzer). This system chronicles the preferences of over 22 million customers, enabling the company to cater to individual needs and build lasting customer loyalty. The article also explains that the strategy can identify customers who have previously failed to pay for their hotel rooms, making the company more profitable and supporting its ability to expand at a rapid pace (Kontzer). The article notes that the company hoped to open 150 new locations in 2005.

Conclusion

The purpose of this paper was to investigate the tactics used by Hilton Hotels in their quest to expand around the globe. The investigation found that key aspects of Hilton's expansion strategy include diversification, customer relations, joint ventures, and capitalizing on the increase in travel that occurred over the preceding years. The company successfully utilized these business strategies not only to expand its operations but also to outpace the competition.
