In 2014, Miami International Airport processed 399,048 flight operations, comprising 209,601 domestic and 189,447 international flights. MIA also moves 2.17 million tons of freight per year and maintains hubs for both FedEx and UPS, among other freight carriers.

Prior to the recent expansions, the airport measured 3.5 million square feet; it now totals 7.5 million square feet. As a result of these expansions, the airport added service in 2015 to five U.S. destinations and three additional international destinations. Passenger growth, which had more or less stagnated in the 33 to 35 million range, has been able to accelerate with the new infrastructure in place.
Impact of Recent Expansions
The newly opened North Terminal includes a cruise ship bus terminal designed to serve that market specifically. Miami-Dade County's light rail system is now linked directly to MIA, improving ground access for travelers. Between the three terminals, there is capacity to handle 7,400 international visitors per hour through customs and inspection (MIA, 2015). The current international load — approximately 20 million visitors annually — equates to around 2,300 arrivals per hour. Given that arrivals do not occur in an even distribution throughout the day, the airport requires capacity well above the 2,300-per-hour baseline. However, a ceiling of triple that level indicates that MIA can accommodate considerable further expansion of international business.
Future Expansion Needs
Even if the airport has sufficient capacity for its international visitor load, the question remains whether it can adequately handle domestic passengers and cargo. The original terminal is slated for replacement, and that transition could temporarily affect domestic passenger capacity. The airport is presently using capacity at the two new terminals to facilitate the transition away from the original facility. Once complete, the original terminal's redevelopment will give MIA the capacity it needs to grow well into the 21st century.
In total, current capacity at MIA is approximately 70 million passengers per year — well above the 40 million passengers per year it currently receives (ENO, 2013). However, landside capacity stands at only 50 million, which gives the airport room to grow while simultaneously highlighting the urgent need for renovation of the old terminal. Bringing landside capacity into closer alignment with runway capacity is essential. The airport's own master plan projects that demand could reach 68 million passengers by 2035, meaning the terminal expansion must be completed before passenger demand reaches the 50 million landside limit.
