This reflection paper examines a nurse practitioner student's clinical experience in a medical and surgical hospital setting. The paper covers the student's relationship with their preceptor, the nature of the patient population encountered, and the facility's range of inpatient and outpatient services. It also explores the personal and professional attributes that supported the student's clinical role, including thorough physical assessment skills and strong interpersonal abilities, while honestly acknowledging areas for growth such as decisiveness under uncertainty.
I have a very fulfilling professional relationship with my preceptor. It is under her supervision and through her wise counsel that I have been able to further enhance my skills. In addition to being a good coach, she serves as my role model. I am confident that I am fulfilling my clinical goals. I must point out that I was expecting exposure to various disease processes and conditions during my clinical rotation. However, in my current clinical setting, the vast majority of patients I attend to are largely healthy, and assessments are mostly focused on specific body parts or extremities that require surgery. Understanding the scope of a nurse practitioner's clinical training helps contextualize why such surgical-focused environments are common preceptorship placements.
I would rate my interactions with patients as pleasant. Most of the patients I interact with on a daily basis are largely jovial and have likeable personalities. With friendly patients and a helpful preceptor, my days are mostly fruitful and full of valuable learning opportunities. It is largely due to my preceptor's helpful and supportive nature that I feel she fulfills my expectations of what a clinical preceptor ought to be in such a setting.
My clinical site is a medical and surgical hospital. The facility offers both inpatient and outpatient services. The inpatient service is designed to care for patients who are expected to spend more than 24 hours at the hospital following surgery. Various surgical procedures are routinely performed at the facility. Outpatient services include, but are not limited to, diagnostic imaging and ambulatory surgery.
