This reflection paper reviews a student's learning experience in an operational management course. The paper covers core concepts encountered throughout the course, including operational efficiency, quality control informed by Deming's experiment, supply chain strategy illustrated through the beer game, and the use of spreadsheet tools and distribution models. The student also evaluates course delivery methods, contrasting the challenges of group case studies with the more rewarding individual project work. Overall, the paper offers a candid assessment of both the strengths and limitations of the course while affirming the practical value of operational management knowledge for a future career in business.
Learning is a slow but steady process. It is fascinating how even the smallest things in life can teach you a great deal. Throughout this course, I have come across a wealth of information that will hopefully serve me well on the practical side of my career. What makes this experience stand apart from previous ones are the opportunities it provided. Not only did the class activities give me deep insight into the managing, designing, and delivering of products according to customer need, but they also gave me the chance to understand the difficulties faced by operating enterprises when implementing management sciences in their everyday practice. Such knowledge now makes me more capable of analyzing the correct concepts and tools related to any market issue and, consequently, making well-informed decisions. I am also now aware of the role that sound decision-making plays in producing better results, and I feel able to perform both quantitative and qualitative analyses of business management problems.
Another strategy that received considerable emphasis during the lectures — particularly through Deming's experiment — relates to improving operational efficiency while maintaining a strict focus on quality. Based on my understanding, reducing cost and increasing capital efficiency are the two most essential factors contributing to greater operational efficiency. The lectures also highlighted the importance of customer satisfaction and how it contributes to increasing revenue. This is one aspect of operational management I will certainly carry forward, as it connects quality control directly to business performance in a way that is both logical and measurable.
Operational management also taught me the importance of supply chain strategy and the competitive advantage it can give a company. The beer game played in class was both exciting and thought-provoking, and it can be credited with developing a clear conceptual understanding in my mind. I am now fully aware that the adoption of a coherent supply chain strategy is vital for the survival of any organization. The computer simulations shown during lectures to improve student understanding were also very impressive, and I would recommend increasing their use in future iterations of the course, as they made abstract concepts far more accessible.

Operational management plays a significant role in the success of a business and the efficient running of a company. A course in operational management not only nurtures the mind in a positive sense, but a qualification in it carries tremendous value and considerable scope within the field of management. This course has been a highly educational experience and has equipped me with the skills required to work effectively and proficiently in the field. I also feel that the knowledge gained has made me more innovative and creative, and capable of facing the challenges of business. I look forward to making good use of what I have learned and to continuing my development through further informative and engaging courses.
