Early Childhood Mathematics Education

High-quality, challenging, and accessible mathematics education for children ages three to six is essential for future mathematics learning (NAEYC and NCTM, 2002). As with reading instruction, teachers should receive pre-service and in-service training that gives them a solid foundation in this discipline.

Math proficiency in the United States has been "well below what is desired and needed" since assessments made in the 1970s. Furthermore, math achievement varies from state to state and even among school districts. The purpose of the NAEYC/NCTM position paper is to establish the importance of mathematics education in early childhood settings. Mathematics has not been accorded the attention it deserves, and most early childhood teachers are not adequately prepared to teach it. The "Good Beginnings" program is designed to enhance children's natural interest in math, build on their existing experience and knowledge, and approach curriculum and teaching practices with an understanding of young children's cognitive, linguistic, physical, and social-emotional development.

Successful teachers of early mathematics will consequently be more effective teachers across the board, given this more solid developmental foundation. As the authors of the position paper note, "even graduates of four-year early childhood programs with state licensure usually lack adequate preparation in mathematics." Successful teaching of mathematics often begins with an attitude adjustment on the part of the teacher, who can impart enjoyment and confidence in math only when she feels it herself. Here again, teacher training is essential.
