Alcohol abuse is a serious issue throughout the world. Many people have been injured and killed as a result of alcohol abuse. Alcoholism also has a negative impact on families and society as a whole.

The first section of the paper focuses on providing several solutions for the alcohol abuse problem from economists' point of view. The second section of the paper addresses the situation of prescription drugs and how they can affect the demand and supply of other products and services. The paper continues with a section that explains the relationship between supply modification and elasticity of demand, and between demand modifications and elasticity of supply. There is also a section that discusses increasing-costs industries. Another section of the paper address the conditions required for competitive markets to be economically efficient.

Drug and alcohol abuse has been a growing problem across the world especially in young adults. In U.S. alone, alcohol is the most often used substance. Almost 90% of adults state some experience with alcohol consumption.

This project consisted of adding two new sections to an existing project concerning drug and alcohol abuse. A findings section and a data analysis section were added, together with several new resources to extend the findings of the original project. Both adolescent as well as adult drug and alcohol abuse are discussed, together with their implications for educators, policymakers and clinicians.

Adolescent alcohol abuse has been an ongoing public health problem for many years. While alcohol abuse trends tend to increase and subside over time, recent research continues to show an alarming level of alcohol use. For example, surveys by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) show that alcohol use has dropped slightly when compared with previous years, in 2011 almost two thirds (65%) of high school seniors and almost one third (29%) of eighth graders had used alcohol within the past month.

Combat is a significant risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and by extension, substance abuse. While research studies continue to find support for this relationship, recent findings suggest this relationship is weak at best. The dominant risk factors are the same for military and civilian populations, which include youth and mental illness. Combat exposure is therefore thought to aggravate substance abuse prevalence among veterans because they were exposed when young and already suffering from mental illness.

This paper examines the causes of alcoholism and alcohol abuse. It begins with the position that approximately half of the cause of alcoholism is genetic, but that other factors influence the expression of this genetic predisposition. The paper examines the biological, psychological, and socio-cultural factors that impact alcohol abuse.
