What is Contrast?

Like a compare and contrast essay, a contrast essay asks you to choose two or more items and ideas and write about them.  However, instead of highlighting similarities between the two things, a contrast essay will describe how they are different.  It is important to note that, in order to have an effective contrast essay, there must be some similarities or shared middle ground between the things being contrasted.  A contrast essay that focused on the differences between a roller skate and the planet Jupiter would contain a lot of contrast, but would be almost incoherent.  However, a contrast essay that focused on the differences in Earth and Jupiter would start from the point where they are similar (planets in the same solar system) and then highlight differences.

Nutritional and environmental differences between farmed and wild salmon
One of the most controversial debates amongst nutritionists and environmentalists is the question as to whether it is better to eat wild versus farmed salmon. Wild salmon is lower in toxic chemicals, fat, and calories than farmed salmon. However, farmed salmon is cheaper, more regularly available throughout the year, and provides a potential solution to the problem of over-fishing. Studies indicate that eating fish in general conveys significant health benefits that outweigh risks.

Walt Disney's transformative leadership and creative vision

However, he was also a famously dictatorial leader who had little interest in the ideas of his staff members. He was transformative in his vision, but authoritarian in his methods of control.

Love and divine unity in Donne and Marvell's metaphysical poetry
This paper compares how love is addressed in the Metaphysical poet John Donne's "The Flea" and "A Valediction Forbidding Mourning" and Andrew Marvell's "The Definition of Love." Although these works may seem superficially like love poems to modern readers, ultimately the poets use their personal lives to make generalized statements about God, religion, and man's place in the universe, rather than use poetry to explore their personal psychology.
