Today, the United States invests enormous sums in its public educational system, but these scarce taxpayer resources are being wasted without the positive long-range impact that effective leadership should have on stakeholders and on the community. Each website or online resource focuses on a specific area or perspective, which is why online field trips are helpful to evolve one’s professional competency and skills. Two of the online field trips I conducted this week include the ACSD (2018) educational leadership pages, and also the “Seven Sides of Educational Leadership.” These are two totally different places to visit and acquire knowledge and information about the culture of education and how to be an effective and student-focused leader. The ACSD (2018) educational leadership pages include information about addressing the mental health needs of students. Starting with a question most readers will take for granted, the author encourages a deep reflection on the nature, function, and purpose of schools. This reading also encourages an open-minded and cross-cultural understanding of how schools serve differential purposes depending on context. Schools have changed over time, and are different in each country. Educators need to contemplate their philosophies so that they can better understand the mission, vision, and guiding purpose of their own institutions. From scheduling lunch shifts to arranging for common planning time, my principal has effectively and efficiently managed the set amount of time that we have in a school day. Knowledge acquired from textbooks and college classes may give me some techniques and standards that effective leaders must know, however they are not going to teach me everything I need to know. The book of Proverbs is one of the more unusual books of the Bible, given that rather than storytelling or prophesy, the book consists of a series of homilies or inspirational phrases intended to encourage the reader to honor his or her father and mother and to place wisdom over riches and worldly success. The book as a whole is a reminder to cherish the important, simple lessons of life. The lessons conveyed by the book are both religious and ethical in nature. One idea which comes to mind when reading the book is that rather than talent, sometimes simply the willingness to be kind, to show up on time, and to behave in an estimable manner is more important.
