Barbara Hamby's poem Invention has a fairly unique format. It is written in story mode that almost represents a stream of consciousness of the writer. Two lines are paired together before a break. However, the breaks do not correspond with punctuation and sentences are free to spill over into the next section. This creates an interesting and somewhat fragmented design for the poem's structure.

The begging of the poem eludes to the authors fascinations with the development of civilization and the technologies that have helped to move it along. She believes that if it were up to her then people would still be chasing boars and clubbing them to death. She doesn't believe that she could have come up with the technology herself to make these progressions. However, there is one exception; she believes she could handle the development of poetry and theatre.

Southern women faced many difficulties during the Civil War. Despite the fact that peanut butter may seem to be a very prosaic, modern food, the reader is immediately transported into a world which is a kind of primitive utopia. Villagers merely survive on pineapple and peanuts. Everyone lives in a state of collective harmony. To further give a primitive and mythic tone to the utopia of the first few paragraphs, Haig elects not to name the inhabitants of the village. Over the past several thousand years, the Chinese have contributed some of the world's most significant technological tools and inventions. Most of these inventions have had a tremendous impact on human history and it is hard to imagine life without any of them. Among the most influential of Chinese inventions include gunpowder/explosives; paper; moveable type; the magnetic compass; tea; noodles; matches; and silk. Of these eight inventions, the four most important include paper, gunpowder, tea, and noodles. Of those four, the Chinese invention I could least likely live without would be noodles.

It is difficult to imagine how human beings could have spread information without paper. "Sonnet 130" by Shakespeare and "Sonnet 23" by Louis Labe both talk about love, as so many sonnets do. Their respective techniques however, differentiate them from each other. Shakespeare uses a rhyme scheme that became known as Shakespearean rhyme scheme or English rhyme. He writes about love in a sarcastic manner though. He is mocking the traditional love poems and the usual expressive manner in which women are often compared to. It is ironic in a way because Shakespeare himself also uses the very techniques in his previous writing when he is writing from a man's point-of-view and describing a woman. But in this sonnet he uses the technique of mocking this exaggerated comparison. Usually women are compared to having skin as white as snow, however, in reality, Shakespeare points out, women don't really fit this description, "If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun."
