What is Missionaries?

Missionaries as a subject of academic study sits at the intersection of religious history, colonial studies, anthropology, and ethnic studies. Students encounter this topic in courses ranging from world history and religious studies to postcolonial theory and indigenous studies. What makes it academically compelling is the layered dynamic between Christian evangelism and the political, cultural, and epidemiological forces that accompanied European expansion. The topic demands analysis of power, belief, and identity simultaneously, making it fertile ground for nuanced argument across multiple disciplines.

The papers archived on this topic reflect a wide range of approaches. Historical and regional case studies dominate, examining missionary activity in contexts such as French Canada, colonial Africa, Australia, and the American Southwest, often focusing on specific groups like the Jesuits and their relations with Algonquin communities. Comparative approaches set European Christian objectives against indigenous frameworks of culture and subsistence, including Maori and Aboriginal Australian societies. Other papers take a policy angle, connecting missionary influence to instruments like the Treaty of Waitangi or westward expansion, while some trace longer consequences such as the disruption of indigenous cultures and the spread of disease among native populations during the colonial era.

A strong essay on missionaries establishes a focused geographic and temporal scope rather than treating the subject globally and superficially. Evidence drawn from primary missionary accounts, indigenous oral histories, or documented policy outcomes tends to carry the most weight. The most common pitfall is framing missionaries as uniformly destructive or uniformly benevolent — strong essays hold both the sincere religious motivations and the damaging colonial consequences in productive tension.

Buddhism's Supremacy in Journey to the West by Wu Cheng'en
One piece of Chinese literature, generally accepted as one of the four great classic novels in Chinese history, is Wu Cheng'en's Journey to the West. It is the fictionalized story of a real monk who traveled to India to learn about Buddhism and collect sacred Buddhist scriptures. But while China has always been a nation of three great religions: Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism, the author maintains that Buddhism is the superior religion of the three. Journey to the west is not only a fictionalized account of a pilgrimage to obtain Buddhist knowledge, it is also a Buddhist allegory for the search for Enlightenment.

European Imperial Expansion 1415–1800: Causes and Powers
There were many factors that caused European powers to expand beyond their original borders and, in many instances, beyond the continent. One of these was simply colonization where one country battled another and claimed its territory as its own. Another factor was trade where the trade dealings of specific countries brought them into contact with another and, thereby imported their influence into foreign soil. The slave trade too was a contributory factor where people from one powerful country captured slaves from an insignificant part of the globe (such as from Africa or captured at sea) and sold them in another.

Slavery, Disease, and Mercantilism in Colonial America
Colonial America – Issues and Answers Questions ONE & TWO: Did race determine whom the colonists, would enslave, or was it coincidental that the majority of the enslaved population would be a certain group? Contrast the slavery issues in Chesapeake with the slavery in South Carolina and Georgia. In the book Slavery in Colonial America, 1619-1776, author Betty Wood delves deeply into the dynamics of the work that needed to be done in Virginia – and who would do that work – beginning in Roanoke in the 1580s (but that community vanished, never to be heard from). Meanwhile, before British settlers left Europe for the New World it was known that Spanish galleons "laden down with gold and other precious metals" were making their way back to Europe from the Americas. Hence, the desire for other Europeans to settle the Americas and find some of that gold and silver was great. The English wanted to emulate the Spaniards, and so in 1606 they established the Virginia Company, thinking that this would be a money making project. Initially the blueprint for the Virginia Company did not involve enslaving any humans to get the work done. The Spaniards and Portuguese had used "racially based systems of slavery that involved large numbers of" African slaves and Native American slaves to carve out profitable colonies in Latin America and the Caribbean, but the British didn't think they needed to enslave people.
