Aging policy in the U.S. has gone through many transitions. When the New Deal architects were planning to bring an end to the widespread poverty the aged were living in, this demographic represented less than 5% of the population. Enacting Social Security legislation was widely supported by the public at the time and this has not changed significantly during the past 80 years. However, the ability of the public to fund entitlements that benefit the aged has decreased substantially as this demographic tripled in size.
