(SPAY USA, 2005) Additionally, aggressive strays spread rabies, disease, and are virtually impossible to find homes for. Even if one has money to burn in caring for an animal, remember that the capture, impoundment and eventual destruction of unwanted animals costs taxpayers and private humanitarian agencies over a billion dollars each year. As a potential source of rabies and other less serious diseases, these stray animals are, if nothing else a public health hazard. (the American Veterinary Medical Association, quoted on SPAY USA Website)

The fate of the animal population rests in responsible pet owner's hands. Dogs and cats cannot chose to exercise socially responsible lifestyles in a world that is human rather than animal created. Thus pet owners must do it for them. By spaying or neutering their animals, pet owners create better companions, healthier lifestyles for themselves, better pet and human relationships, better and safer communities, and fewer unwanted strays.

Pet ownership can be a true time commitment. Not only is a person responsible for the pet, but also responsible for anything that pet does to someone else. A commitment that can last for years, pet ownership must be taken seriously. That is why it is important to understand the expense of owning a pet, how much time someone is willing to invest in the care and raising of the

First, adopting a pet from a shelter or rescue means that an animal that would have been euthanized has been saved from that fate. However, choosing to adopt rather than shop has additional benefits. Many, if not most, of the animals that are bred to be sold as purebreds or hybrids on the companion animal market are bred by disreputable breeders. In addition to the squalid living conditions for

Toulmin-Based Argument in Support of Pet Adoptions From Shelters More people who want pets should adopt them from shelters because many unwanted animals are being destroyed each year in favor of purebred species obtained from other sources which provide their operators with a profit. The worth of the lives of these otherwise-doomed animals, though, far outweighs the individual pet-owning preferences of owners and no animal should be destroyed in favor of

domestication of dogs over ten thousand years ago, companion animals have held a special place in the hearts of people. For many people, owning a companion animal is a rewarding and enjoyable affair. Pets will offer unconditional love and support that may otherwise be unobtainable to people in today's cold-hearted, "dog-eat-dog" society.
