Cardiovascular Surgery Essay

Cardiovascular surgery includes operations on the heart and blood vessels of the body to repair structural defects of the cardiovascular system. If a patient's heart condition poses a significant risk to their health and livelihood, surgery is the preferred treatment option. There are more than a half million heart surgeries performed in the U.S. each year for heart problems. Heart surgery may be performed on both children and adults. Heart surgery can reduce symptoms, improve quality of life, and increase lifespan (National Heart Lung and Blood Institute). There are many different types of heart surgery. Surgeries are performed to:

Repair or replace valves controlling the direction of blood flow through the heart's chambers

Bypass or widen blocked or narrowed arteries to the heart

Destroy small amounts of tissue that disturb electrical flow through the heart

Repair damaged or abnormal structures of the heart

Implant medical devices that are used to control the heartbeat or support heart function and blood flow

Make channels in the heart muscle to allow blood...

Cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of death in the U.S., may require cardiovascular surgery for treatment. Other cardiovascular surgeries include surgical treatment of aortic aneurysm, transmyocardial laser revascularization (TMR), carotid artery problems and lung and esophagus problems (Schools in the U.S.A.).
Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is the most common type of heart surgery for adults. During CABG, the cardiovascular surgeon uses healthy arteries or veins taken from another part of the body to go around or bypass blocked heart arteries. The benefits of CABG include relief of chest pain and reduced risk of heart attack (National Heart Lung and Blood Institute).

There have been many improvements to CABG since the…

The first heart sound is generally longer and lower than the second, producing a heartbeat that sounds like lub-dup, lub-dup, lub-dup. Blood pressure, the pressure exerted on the walls of blood vessels by the flowing blood, also varies during different phases of the cardiac cycle. Blood pressure in the arteries is higher during systole, when the ventricles are contracting, and lower during diastole, as the blood ejected during systole moves

Although the severities of congestive signs may be similar, medical evaluation should be instructed to determine whether there is accompanying proof of cardiovascular disease. Physical proof of cardiovascular disease contains the narrow pulse pressure, cool arms, and legs, and sometimes changed mentation, with supporting proof sometimes provided by reducing serum sodium level and deteriorating renal function. Cardiovascular disease is frequently difficult to recognize through phone contact but may be

It is important to note that the relationship between pain and anxiety is reciprocal. Painful experiences may lead to anxiety (e.g., "Something must be wrong... Increased anxiety will lead to accentuated perception of pain, which further increases the anxiety level. Obviously, potentially traumatic experiences may result unless there is some intervention in this pain-anxiety cycle. Narcotics may be helpful, but psychological interventions are quite appropriate in this regard. (King, 1991,

The first article, Changes in Mitral Regurgitation After Replacement of the Stenotic Aortic Valve (2008) stresses a relatively large patient study of those undergoing Aortic valve replacement and then possibly experiencing mitral regurgitation (MR), a common and sometimes concerning complication that as the study shows can occur without any known mitral defect. The study is significant in that it establishes the fact that MR is not as dangerous as once
