The essential goal of fault tree analysis is to determine the cause of system failures in the event of a past failure, or as a preemptive tool to determine the probabilities of failure based on specific events. By mapping out the events and components of a system, an FTA can be used to calculate these probabilities and so point out point in the system that might leave it more susceptible to failure. The FTA has both a preventative and a post-mortem function, then, and few would disagree that the former is the more impressive and necessary of the two.

Replacement of the flawed/hazardous component keeps consumers safer and happier, and product traceability allows recalls to happen without running the cost to producers of recalls of their entire stock.
The reason product traceability is such an important consumer safety issue is because it allows consumers to know potentially hazardous information regaridng their products. Without traceability, any health issue arising from a product could create fear for the entire product class. With traceability, however, specific jars of peanut butter or lead-painted toys can be recalled, and consumers will know exactly which products -- and which units amongst which products -- are dangerous.
